Sega's answer to the NES will soon be making an appearance on the Nintendo Wii as Sega announces the impending release of Sega Master System titles for the Virtual Console. SMS games will be showing up in Japan first, with Fist of the North Star and Fantasy Zone at 600 and 500 Wii points, with European and US releases to follow later this year. Sega also plans on distributing Game Gear and Sega Mark III titles along with the SMS favs. I have to admit that I never actually owned a Master System, which didn't quite take off here in the states, so I am looking forward to filling a gap in my gaming knowledge with delicious Sega goodness from back in the day while I patiently wait for them to start releasing Sega Nomad* games.
Master System Meets Wii [IGN]

Effing Sweet! I haven't played Master System since I stopped hanging out with that guy who smelled like dog pee in grade two!
That looks like some sort of franken-cassette player.
Where the hell is my 2600?!? I want to play some Combat!
I remember having one of those little add-on things for the genesis that allowed "backwards compatibility" with the Master System. Hardly any of the games I could rent worked and the one's that did were extremely unimpressive. I'm not sure just how many good games we'll end up seeing for this thing as I can't count a single one I enjoyed on the system. Anybody know of any decent one's?
anything before the Snes is pretty much boring as hell
Come on, Gangster Town! *crosses fingers*
The SMS was the first system I bought with my own money. Didn't it have the screw-into-d-pad removable joystick?
I used to play it witha a kid named Tonx, I wonder what ever happened to him?
This is unfortunate. I'm a fan of the Master System, but I plan on selling my Wii. The prospect of playing Alex Kidd or Shinobi after all these years almost makes me want to keep it.
Actually, looking at that pic, it doesn't look like the system I had. Maybe I got my systems mixed up.
This only reminds me that the PSN sucks so hard in terms of classic titles. Yea, PS1 games are awesome, but I don't want to choose between shitty and less shitty. Also, I want some god damn remakes, e.g. SF2. Every other console has it by now.
Happy Birthday...fella.
The Nomad was just a portable Genesis. There were no specific Nomad games. It was enormous, but damned cool back in its day.
The problem with adding more consoles to the VC at this point is all the consoles with a significant amount of good games are already there, and the consoles you can reasonably expect them to add (which doesn't include Saturn for obvious reasons) are going to have 1 or 2 good games at best. Oh well, I'll be happy to buy Phantasy Star whenever they get around to adding it.
next i want sega cd.......*crickets crickets* I'm serious; I loved the 3 games that came out for it
@hawk3r: You know why it was called the "Nomad"?
Because it wandered from owner to owner.
@mydogisdexter:
rofl!
@Mommar: Not really, I had a Master System as well. Really most of the good master system games got better versions released on the Genesis and such eventually. The Master System sonic games weren't bad though.
They need to put the Sega Snail game on the Wii VC - since it was a free hidden game in the original Sega Master Systems, they should make it a free game on the Wii VC. Even for a few bucks, I would buy it - my son would love to play the snail maze game on the wii.

@Waza: ... Sonic, Mario, Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear, Zelda, Double Dragon, Rampage, Rampart, Contra, Battletoads, Duck Hunt, Dragon Warrior, etc. Yep. Boring as hell...
Saturn and Dreamcast are up next.
C'mon Sega CD and Saturn! Ah, such a dream.
Yay. ^-^ I can play Sonic Chaos Again. There was a ridicoulus amount of good games on the Game Gear.
@Gon: Dreamcast can't be done on the Wii. The games are too big and I think the same applies to the Saturn.
@smitty1123:
You forgot Final Fantasy, and Double Dribble.
I still have my Master system and 32+ games...and it still works, only problem is I can't locate the controllers. :(
@Gon:
Not gonna happen. The Saturn is an extremely difficult system to emulate even on really powerful PC's and the Dreamcast definitely isn't going to be emulatable (!?) on the Wii.
SegaCD is certainly possible, and there are some great games for that system that never hit anything else (Out of this World 2, Popful Mail, Dark Wizard, Lunar 1 and 2 which were much better than the PSX versions).
32X is probably doable also but there wasn't really much decent released for it.
I actually have two working SMSs. Loved that system. Space Harrier, Phantasy Zone, Choplifter, Shinobi...classic gaming. As a kid, we had an NES and our friends accross the street had the SMS so we all had PLENTY to do.
I remember owning a SMS. Myself and everybody else had problems with the controller breaking after a few months of usage. The buttons and everything else stoped working. Which was sad becuase I was only 10 during that time my aunt came to vist me and gave me and my borther some money. We both chipped in for it.
We were to young and didn't know who to complain to. There were no extra controllers to be bought seperate either. FUCK SEGA.
Sonic Chaos... soon you will be mine.
@Seiven:
Got a Genesis? I'm pretty sure the controllers are compatible. They both use that 9-pin Atari connector. I used to use my SMS pads to play C64 games :p
Gotdamit! effn' vc! What ru doin' MS!??!?! Many 360 owners are oldhead sega fans and we would really enjoy this....good thing I still have my master system, megadrive, saturn, and dreamcast.....but it'd be nice to play these games on my 360!
@skullivan: Good list of SegaCD classics. Still have my copies of Lunar 1, 2, Popful Mail, and Shining Force...REALLY want a copy of VAY, though. Good old school RPG.
I actually have 2 32Xs. Might be 3 now...I buy them whenever I find them cheap. NEED to find a copy of Doom! Had that when it came out and LOVED it...though I now know the PC version is 10x better. Do have Chaotix, Virtua Fighter, and that hummingbird one...
@skullivan: Last time I checked, this DOES work. Hell, for one button games, you can use an Atari joystick!
I'm just hoping for the dreamcast on VC really. and if they'd add the capacity to connect and make function an external drive with the wii, that would be great, because downloading, deleting and redownloading isn't part of my hobbies. the space limitation is rather pissing
@smitty1123:
you forgot Megaman, Ducktales, Chip & Dales: Rescue Rangers, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Kung Fu, Kid Icarus, Ninja Turtles, River City Ransom...
Excellent. Now gimme my Wonder Boy III already.
Also, why wouldn't the Wii be able to handly GC games!? GC discs only held 1 GB if I'm not mistaken, and if the Xbox could handle it, why not the Wii!?
Aaah the good old Master System. I have about 30 games for mine, so I dunno if I'll find anything that I want to buy on the VC. The only Master System games I really enjoying playing still are Fantasy Zone and Phantasy Star.
My first console was a Master System *sheds a tear* so many hours of fun...
@Zolbrod:
Do you even own a Wii? Because anyone that does should know it only has 512mb of memory... see the problem there? Besides you can play them from the disc on the Wii...
@skullivan: nope unfortunately don't have my Genesis anymore.
@SithNinja & @Datalock: I forgot tons. The list of pre-SNES greatness just goes on and on.
@cchrist: I'd pay for the Wii to just emulate the Saturn and/or Dreamcast. Still have my disks!
I predicted it! I've been saying this for a while. Everyone said, no no you're crazy. Well now who's crazy?
@Zolbrod: OMG, Wonder Boy 3 was such a fantastic game! I loved the SMS. I still take it out occasionally and play my old games and it works like a dream. Alex Kidd! Outrun! Shinobi! Wonder Boy! Space Harrier!
Phantasy Star! The first RPG I ever beat! Wow, that'll fit nicely in the VC. $69.99 it cost in 1989. Because it used a 4meg chip and a battery, oooh! hehe. The 3D dungeons though astounded me for the time. This is even before I played Wolfenstein 3-D. So seeing 3D Dungeons was like a revelation in those days.
@Orionsaint: Uhm, your still crazy. Who cares?
Wee~~~I need to buy some Wii points NOW, still havent bought any title from the VC T.T
Master System? What good games are for it? I always get confused from the amount of Sega systems back in the day =(
@Zolbrod: yes! wonder boy III was my "super mario bros." grew up with that game.
Fist of the North Star? Hmm... they completely revamped that to Black Belt in America I believe. I have it and it's awesome. But if it is FOTNS, rock on!
Gimme some Kenseiden, please!
@Witzbold: The reason it was called the Nomad?
Surely it was Sega trying to be ironic as with its hellish battery consumption it was the only nomad that always had a home, i.e. connected to the mains!
Oh, I stand corrected - the Atari Lynx ate batteries too.
@Waza: "anything before the Snes is pretty much boring as hell"
No way! My Wii & PS3 are gathering more dust than is apparently normal due to a newfound love of Sega Saturn. I'm enjoying NiGHTS on Saturn more than the recent sequel on Wii...
Erm, I'm obviously aware Saturn came after SNES but just wanted to make the point that retro games can still be fab and in some cases better than current-gen remakes/sequels
(Pre-Pedophilia) Michael Jackson's Moonwalker! I can't wait!
