Katamari meets side-scrolling shooter in Blast Works, the newly announced title from Majesco coming out next year for the Wii. Far from your standard shooter, as you fight through missions, blasting your enemies to smithereens, those smithereens get attached to your ship. The bigger you are, the harder you are to kill, a saying I've found pleasantly accurate over the years.
In addition to this unique mechanic, Blast Works also features multiple game editors, allowing you to create new levels, new enemies, and even build your own ship from scratch, bringing it into battle in either the single player mode or 2-player co-op.
Blast Works looks to be a breath of fresh air in the relatively stale shmup genre, and exactly the type of quirky goodness I want to play on my Wii. Check out the gallery below or hit the jump for the inevitable press release.
MAJESCO ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES BLAST WORKS FOR THE Wii CONSOLE
Sticky Shooter With Retro Styling Features Multiple Editors For Maximum Creativity
BRISTOL, UK, June 27th, 2007 - A frenetic geometric battle is heading to the Wii™ home video game system as Majesco Entertainment Company (NASDAQ: COOL), an innovative provider of video games and digital entertainment products for the mass market, today announced Blast Works: Build, Fuse & Destroy. Developed by Budcat Creations and scheduled for a Q1 2008 release in Europe, Blast Works is a side-scrolling shooter that lets players craft the game to their liking by building their own levels, ships and enemy ships. In addition, players can "absorb" the pieces and weapons of destroyed enemy ships to bolster their own defenses during battle.
"Gamers can literally build their own shooter experience via Blast Works' easy-to-use, multiple in-game editors," said John Merchant, Marketing Manager, Majesco Europe. "This exceptional customisation combined with the unique "stickiness" of enemy debris and bright geometric graphics delivers a standout game that never plays the same way twice."
Across more than 15 different land, air and sea missions, the goal of Blast Works is to destroy enemy ships while continually growing your own into a massive craft by absorbing their fragments. The larger a "fused ship" is, the easier it is to protect from the growing onslaught of enemy firepower. Players can also upgrade their ship in the Hangar by customising weapons, propulsion systems and armour. Creative types will further enjoy building a ship from scratch with the Ship Editor and then testing it out in combat on a custom level they've built with the Level Editor. To defend the Hangar, players must use the Wii Remote™ like an anti-aircraft turret to shoot down enemies attacking from all angles. Finally, the game's 2-player cooperative mode lets players work together to blast enemies, fuse debris to grow their ships and finish the mission as a team.

Finally, something new for the wii that isn't a mini-game.
Man this game is free........ and old I can't believe they are charging for free games what is the developing world coming to. Seems like they adopted the movie industry policy of ripping on someones workk or rehashing it.
You forgot to mention the game this is based off of, Tumiki Fighters. Which is free and incredibly fun.
@t0yrobo:
I think that it was announced way back that Tumiki was coming to some platform and when it would be released the 'Free' version wouldnt be so free anymore.
HA! It so is bizaro Geometry Wars.
"relatively state shmup"
I looked state up in the dictionary and couldn't find any meaning for it that fit your usage here. I'm sure there must be a different word you're looking for.
Anyhow, I quite liked Tumiki Fighters, but can't really see how the thing could be on the level of a full priced game. Maybe this could be for the Wii's new original downloadable content recently promised?
@Rukusa: Oh really, well I guess you all should pick it up while you can.

Nice! I love these types of games. I'll buy it!
Why did they have to change the name? Tumiki Fighters to complicated? One of my favorite games, but unless they make some insane improvements (like coop multiplayer) I don't plan to pay for what's already on my computer for free.
It doesn't even look any different from the original.... I'm hoping this isn't a trend in Wii downloadable content cuz I'm going to be skipping this one.
I am somewhat disappointed that Kenta Cho receives no mention at all for actually coming up with the game concept. I'll probably buy this, but I'm not happy that I'd be giving money to someone other than the original programmer and visionary.
It's just a port of Tumiki fighters. I don't expect Majesco to mention it in the press release, but shame on Kotaku for not knowing. You can't expect to report on video games if the people reading your stuff know more than you do.
Ugh, I thought after seeing the logo earlier that they were going to redo the graphics a little, or at least make the colours a little less muddy/muted. Guess not.
Kenta Cho is one of my favorite developers and I am glad that he will get paid. I hope more of his game will come to consoles. Hopefully handheld consoles.
@Apreche: Especially when you consider that they already reported correctly on it.
Looks fun! I'm down
Bring on the Hori Stick, oh yeah!
I can't believe there are people here that expect every writer on this site to know every thing about every little obscure game in existence. It's not even possible lol.
Yeah, I'm all for "quirky" graphics, and the screenshot thumbnails had me all excited for a Rez-like look, but then I clicked through to the big versions and I was all like "bleh". They almost look like placeholder graphics. I mean there's style and then there's just plain laziness. In this day and age, I don't think plain colored boxes to represent game items really cuts it anymore. I mean the Bally Astrocade and Magnavox Odyssey 2 are no longer going concerns.
I've never played the original free version, and I probably wouldn't mind graphics like this in a free game (in fact I can guarantee I wouldn't), but when I'm paying money for something I expect a little more polish from it.
When I heard Kenta Cho had a game coming to the Wii, I just knew it was going to be Tumuki Fighters. It's not bad game, though I prefer rRootage. I think this would be perfect as a WiiWare game instead of a boxed game.
@Ketsuban: I guess the name is too complicated. It's spelled wrong in that article right at the top.
My first thought is that this was Noiz2a but I guess it's on the same developer page that TUMIKI Fighters is on (in jp so I can't read it). Noiz2a runs on OSX, I'm not sure if TF has a port for Mac.
Is TUMIKI Fighters (this one) the one where your ship gets larger and larger? IIRC, this is in the near-abstract shooter genre.
I dont know, I doubt I pick this up but who knows.
the graphics in this game is a fxxking insult.
Wow is that game ugly...
Yeap I'm wonder what else they will add but I'll be getting this one any way... Now where is maple story for the Wii!
It's like the old days release some share ware then go big time with it. Almost no one knows about this game.. really... this news has been out for a while and the free version has been out way longer... Why this wasn't on the xbox 360 is any ones guess...
May be I like it just because this is what games look like before you get to make the pretty...LOL
So if they add sprites and some 3d object you would be all over it then huh?
Does anyone know if this will be retail or download?
Wonder if they will also make my gavorite "Torus Trooper" too! Kenta Sho is one talented individual. His games would fit nicely on the newly confirmed Wii Ware channel.
Kenta Cho makes amazing games, good to see he might actually make some money off one of em :D
... Holy crap, TUMIKI Fighters.
... Holy crap, more people who know who Kenta Sho is.
I need Noiz and Torus Trooper for console now. NOW. Do you hear me?
Cool concept, but is that really all they could do with the graphics? Im a big fan of Rez and other old-school vector type graphics, but this game doesn't even look as good as the original Tempest arcade game. How about a good port of Spectre VR?
It's been mentioned here numerous times, but it really can't be stated enough - if you're a fan of shooters who hasn't heard of his work, you really need to acquaint yourself with some Kenta Cho. I particularly recommend rRootage - bullet hell at its finest, with modes that reference other classics like Ikaruga.
Torus Troopers would be pretty fantastic for the Wii. Hold the Wiimote sideways, and tilt left and right to steer. Built for it, man!
All you Kenta Cho fans need to also check out this page here. Warning Forever is the pick, but Shooters Solitude is also extremely worthy, and may just remind you of a certain radiant title...
it's like tron on acid
For the love of Gunstar, why is this for Wii and not DS?
Uhg, they could've at least kept the old name.
The irony of a years-old freeware game being called a "blast of fresh air" is truly sweet.
Tumuki Fighters clone or not, it still looks good.
...I've played this game before.
Except is was called Tumiki Fighters.
Ooh, game editor? That alone would justify a budget purchase! :D

@RPGZero:
Dudes. Not everything needs to be brown and "extreme". Have a mountain dew and a smile.
An original screen shot of TUMIKI Fighters
The new game, Blastworks
"You forgot to mention the game this is based off of, Tumiki Fighters. Which is free and incredibly fun."
Based off?
Looks exactly the same. Good thing in my books.
