Worried over Devil May Cry 4's mandatory install on the PS3? It's OK. You can try before you buy! Crecente's taking one for the team and will be installing the game, following Capcom's instructions on how to pass the time to the letter. That means a sandwich, and that means a soda. A low blood sugar level doesn't just make him dizzy, it makes his hair go limp, and lifeless, and nobody wants to see that.
[And...we're done! Final install time was right on Capcom's estimates: 22 minutes, which gave him plenty of time to both make a delicious salami sandwich and polish off a beer]

I thought it wasn't mandatory and you could play off of the disk.
Nope, a lot of people arguing didn't realize it was indeed mandatory.
Word to the wise - watch the recap before you make your food. It loops. Dear lord does it loop.
I'm just getting a white square. Is that my computer or is the video not up yet?
Riveting!

Give it time, we're still setting it up. Click on the "watch live video" bit to go straight to the raw link.
not even video...but TEXT.....25 minutes of looping text!
From what people say it takes 20 minutes to install. Which is very odd, since my computer can install a 8gb game, which is quite common now.. In 5 minutes. I guess the install speed is ripped apart by the blu-ray drive speed.
How large is the install, by the way? Curious.
Nifty Place! :D
If you watched 'the live streaming of DMC4 mandatory install' then you are very sad and lonely.
@2SBs: Hey, this is SCIENCE
that install really is nothing, imo. Just received the game today and I must say that I LOVE the loading time resulting of the install. :)
Almost SNES-loading time indeed. :)
@Luke Plunkett: Just wonderin'. No worries.
@Moonshadow101: 5GB according to one of the earlier articles.
What time did this start? I mean I saw pictures on the screen doesn't that mean some thing's working? Unless its the load screen.
@Luke Plunkett: We do what we must because we can.
@ceilingFANBOY: should be doing homework:
Are you using NoScript on Firefox? If so, set it to allow justin.tv.
What was the reason for making it mandatory to install this game to play it? Also, why doesn't the 360 version force you to do this?
@DismantleRepair: That's what I figured.
I think the flashing that the video was doing to me just gave me a seizure.
Did you forget your tripod Crecente? Also, you turned the volume up on the tv, but we can't actually hear anything.
@Moonshadow101: The box sleeve of my DMC4 (PAL Collector's Version) says 4838MB, the PS3 says 4834MB.
The real sadness here is that (according to 1up.com) the PS3 version cuts down load times from 3-4 seconds to 1-2. So... what's the damn point?
Seems like I'll be picking it up on 360.
i think it's kindof blown out of proportion a bit. i had no problem with the installation. i took off for a bit to make some tea and watched a bit of t.v and it was done.
For a second there I thought you were going to the bathroom. This is too bizarre.
Sorry, but you won me when you put on the mood lighting in the room. Romancing the install wait time. If I ever get a PS3, remind me to get some wicked candles and incense. That'll lighten the evening for me.
damn camera. i feel like its cloverfield all over again
Its worth installing my friend has the 360 version, and I have the ps3 version and mine looks better :-)
I wish I had a kitchen... stupid dorm.
@legendofmike: It doesn't help that there's a penny arcade comic about it either. I know they were just making fun of the press release, but it they really aren't helping.
Gogo Halo Head Cam!
Non-issue of the month.
@Sollus: Because not every 360 has a hard drive.
@DismantleRepair: It's still not working for me. I get the play button with stuff flashing rapidly behind it and I can't press play. It's probably something with my computer. Meh, I'm going to bed anyway and this probably isn't actually all that interesting to watch, anyway.
Crecente, what kind of beer are you into?
Haha, watching your install ritual was hilarious. I love how you actually took their advice and made a sandwich. Good stuff. Sadly, it was still installing by the time you returned.
OK, we're starting to have too many people with penguin avatars here.
Mmmm Sandwich grarglgrarglgrargl
And the problem is? This is why the PS3 is honestly so great. A mandatory hard drive allows game developers to factor in the extra storage space no matter what. Microsoft shafted the 360 by keeping the core around so long, and then replacing it with the arcade pack and its wimpy memory card. I wouldn't be surprised if GTA IV took advantage of the hard drive, and I wouldn't be surprised by games like Soul Calibur 4 doing the same. So it might turn around for us PS3 owners, where not only will we have slightly brighter sharper graphics, but also great load times.
Anyone else think that the amount of bitching and moaning about waiting 20 minutes goes a long way to say how pathetic and whinny gamers are getting these days?
Seriously.. You put it in and walk away fro 20 minutes, it's not like you have to pop in a new disc every 3 minutes.
Nice T.V.
One day, i'll master the layout of your house...
Can you zoom in more please!? I'd like to see some of the slides! ;D
Please tell me you have a camera attached to your head.
Sorry, I just joined in so I have no idea what's going on.
What are you doing on the computer there? Learning sandscript? Bitches love sandscript.

Sandwiches are tasty.
Though the lack of sound is... uh... I don't know. Were you as bored as I am watching?
@weasl: I can understand a few of the points people (like L_K_M) have made about not wanting the game to suck up HDD resources, but yes, agreed... the whining about 20 minutes of time is just weird.
Like time and space will implode if you can't play the game right away. Sheesh, get a 2nd hobby... or read the manual! No one ever reads those damn things anymore.
BTW you still keep your save files even if you decide to uninstall the game for if you want to install again later.
Read the recap while enjoying the beautiful operatic song, watched Zero punctuation, called up a friend to make him feel like shit for not having DMC4; looked at the ceiling momentarily, pondered the meaning of mankind's microcosm of an existence, started up DMC4. Hasn't been off since. Good times.
Oh my god are people so damn picky. It's better to install it and have those faster load times, plus the game kicks ass, after you have it on and are playing it you dont even look back.
@weasl: You could aleady be 20 minutes into the game if it weren't for the mandatory install.
dude i just let it install and walked off and ate lunch came back and it was done.
@bangbangblah:
He going to show us something nasty...
But its a surprise!!! lol
so how has it been?
Why is it mandatory?
I thought you get to choose.
oh well.
@Luke Plunkett: What is the experiment?
How much time does a twenty minute install, installs in?
When conducting such experiment one must take following factors that will affect the final result into consideration:
1. Room temperature
2. Air humidity
3. Surface area of the disk (how clean is it?)
4. Surface area of the laser lens reader (how clean is it?)
Therefore it is advisable to repeat the experiment several times over and post the mean time of the acquired results.
