The latest issue of Nintendo Power features a cover story and 7-page feature on BioWare's role playing game for the Nintendo DS that stars Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. Titled Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, the portable RPG is said to be a stylus-controlled affair a la The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass by NeoGAF member giggas, who already has a copy of the mag and is responsible for the scan of the cover.
According to details from the newest issue of Nintendo Power, the game has a hand-drawn watercolor style. Each member in your party—which can total four of the eleven available characters—will have special abilities (we're betting the farm on Sonic being fast). Battles are turn-based and attacks are said to follow an Elite Beat Agents model.

This will be a good sonic game. I can feel it in my bones.
It has to be good because it cant be as bad as the recent trash we've received. right? *high fives everybody*
Winner (game looks awesome, actually)...and surfer girl was technically right.
Now for the final delivery...can BioWare make it great?
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
Elite Beat Agents model? Ok, you have my attention.
I never imagine Sonic would be an RPG someday but this sounds pretty good and the hand drawn graphics should provide a nice touch. Of course, RPGs on the DS always equal to gold in my book.
The game is beginning to sound more interesting, can't wait to read the article.
and, and, ouendan style battles!!!!
finally, there is life for me after brawl!
Well, considering what I was expecting, they've done it all wrong. They made an RPG with Sonic in it, not a Sonic RPG.
There's a big difference. I wanted a classic Sonic game with an overworld map, skill upgrades, hit points, a deeper plot, etc...
Not a generic RPG with no sense of speed whatsoever.
@Kirbytheslayer: Proud Norwegian Defense Force Supporter: Not that there's anything wrong with that. It just fell incredibly short of my fantasy.
@Shindokie (psn and xbl):
It'll be good because SONICTEAM isn't developing it. ;P
*Fingers Crossed*
@Kirbytheslayer: Proud Norwegian Defense Force Supporter: quit whining, non-believer.
This is making me think of Super Mario RPG a bit. All I can say is w00t.
The watercolor style sounds interesting... I'm curious to see how that's gonna turn out, if only because I've never really associated Sonic with anything but super-saturated pixely goodness.
...But I don't own a DS. -_-
*Everyone stares at Remanance.*
0__0...What?
*Everyone points.*
"Shun the disbeliever! Shun! Shun!"
Hmm, could be great. I'll wait and see though. Not that I doubt the developer, but since it's Sonic many things can go wrong. I hope speed plays a good factor somehow with the game.
I probably was gonna get this anyway, so this only made me more inclined to do that
@Shindokie (psn and xbl): I liked Sonic and the Secret Rings. All you haters be hating.
That aside, the comparisons to the Paper Mario RPGs alone will make this game go over poorly.
I can't help but feel that Sonic is some old dude that is trying to revive his youth hits, a la Stallone... but Sonic sucks.
This sounds a little bit interesting tho. I just hope they don't keep that fucking music and that fucking Sonic voice and that fucking "that's rad!" attitude.
I put on my robe and wizard hat.
I didn't even know they still published Nintendo Power. Who still subscribes to that? Where the f*ck have I been?
This'll probably be the first Sonic game in a long time that hasn't sucked, since Bioware will sprinkle it with it's magic powder of epicness that Mass Effect has flowing through it's arteries.
If Bioware and not Sega is doing it, then I'm sure it'll be a really great game!
What?!
EBA YOU SAY?
I don't care if its crap! If it has some sort of EBA goodness within, Im sold!
@thejakeman: Remake JFG! or at least put it on VC!: Non-believer?
I believe the issue is that I'm too much of a believer.
Ripped straight from an interview when the game was announced:
"
RM: We plan on taking those core Sonic elements that fans love about games and incorporating them into a brand new adventure that will feature the best of both worlds: all the fast-paced action of Sonic, plus a deep and engaging storyline that will keep players on the edge of their seats. By staying true to those Sonic elements that fans are already familiar with, and injecting our own unique BioWare flavor, we plan to make that transition as smooth and exciting as possible."
What happened to that? I honestly believed that's what they were gonna do, and that they could pull it off.
Now I find out they gave up on that.
I'm dissapointed.
Full Stylus Control? Big The Cat? right.. off the radar with this
Bioware + Sonic = WIN!!
as long as Sega is nowhere near this project....
@Kirbytheslayer: Proud Norwegian Defense Force Supporter: Since when have still scans done Sonic any justice whatsoever?
Although I would join you in your complaints if/when a few gameplay videos come out and it doesn't feel like Sonic...
@Kirbytheslayer: Proud Norwegian Defense Force Supporter: Well, Secret Rings had level ups and skill upgrades, anyway. Not exactly what you wanted, but worth noting.
And this game's story has a twist that ties to the older games? I am EXTREMELY interested in this. Story continuity isn't big in Sonic games, but I'm familliar with the minute details of every Sonic game, and would love if story elements from the old games would be brought up.
Bring back FAST paced grinding from SA2 and you'll sell me a DS. That and don't, don't, DON'T force me to play as other characters!
* LET me dream! I know it's an RPG.*
I still say they should take Sonic back to his 2D roots. I mean you make the visuals all next-genish, but we need to have Sonic running to the right of us instead of him running away from us. Although this little article has me intrigued. Can Bioware do it? Can they breath life into everyones favorite blue Hedgehog?
It's from Bioware. It has a chance.
@masterage: Actually, it was the line "Full stylus control ala LoZ" that made me disappointed.
I'm fine with the art style, but.... there's no way you can maintain the speed while vaguely leading him around.
@Shy_Link: I own ever Sonic Comic #1-100, and most of the new series(despite it sucking)
@Mikey-G: What have the GBA and DS games been doing?
How can something that sounds straight out of Sonic fan fiction ("Dark Brotherhood"? Man that's taking itself seriously) still manage to sound so, so awesome?
Curse you, Bioware. I think I care about a Sonic game again.
For the DS eh?
I'm actually pretty excited.
And I haven't been excited for a Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2.
What is this... feeling? It burns ussssss...
I think this is the first time in years I've actually been excited for a Sonic game.
I just hope Shadow and Blaze are NOT in this game. Shadow is overused and while Blaze is indeed a great Sonic character, I don't want her character to suffer the same, whored-out fate Shadow has.
@Shy_Link: Don't get me wrong the GBA and DS games were great but I mean console wise. Lord knows that "Sonic" game for the 360 almost had me gouging my eyes out. I remember the first time I put my hands on Sonic Rush, oh how the juices of nostalgia flowed.
After playing Sonic 360, there's no way to go but up.
the game looks freaking amazing
Someone has to ask: so will it have a lesbian sex scene ala Mass Effect?
This actually sounds quite good. Let's just hope it IS.
@munkah: After the Sonic beastality in the 360 game... why the hell not? Rouge, Blaze! Get over here.
Legend of the Seven... Super Emeralds?
This is the best fucking news I've heard in weeks. Man I can't wait for this shit.
@Kirbytheslayer: Proud Norwegian Defense Force Supporter: So you wanted Super Paper Sonic, or something? I don't know if you were actually thinking realistically there, dude.
I basically unconditionally love Bioware's stuff, so I'll probably end up buying this even though I don't give a rat's ass about Sonic. Especially if they're making it like Elite Beat Agents, which is still one of my favorite games for the DS. Which is saying something because the DS has so many great games.
That looks fucking epic.
Also,I'm betting 5,000 points that if it's good, half the reviews will say,"Bioware has managed to pack all the speed of the mainstream Sonic games into an RPG in a way that feels fluid and intuitive."
What will you do?: Roll North
You see a Ring. What will you do?: Inspect
The ring is shiny. What will you do?: Roll On Ring
You gain 10 Experience Points!
This is going to be awesome, but if you don't mind me saying. Isn't the idea of using rings as currency, putting down the entire initial idea behind their "origin" if you will. These aren't coins from Mario, they are rings, a source of Sonic's energy, the reason why he doesn't die in the classic games. Gold yes, but not currency! It sort of demeans their value if you ask me.
@Mikey-G: Sonic Rush (1, not the rubbish sequel) showed it could be done! \o/
I like the current art style. Somehow, I still can't picture Bioware working on any Sonic title, much less a Sonic RPG. But their involvement in such a project will guarantee it turning out to be at least halfway decent.
Sweet, I guess that means it'll have super-complex dialogue trees that'll ultimately boil down to:
A) Sure, I'll help you. Have my car. And my wallet. I love you.
B) I am a gray.
C) HOW DARE YOU APPROACH ME. YOU WILL NOT LIVE ANYMORE.
After the last two mediocre Bioware outings I am approaching this one with certain amount of hesitation. Couple that with not the greatest source material, not really well suited for biowares style of gameplay and you get something with a lot of potential suck. I am scared.
