Alliance Forces Back Ron Paul

leeroypaul.jpgRepublican presidential candidate Ron Paul has been called the internet's candidate, and what's on the internet can't help but spill over into World of Warcraft. On New Year's Day a group of Paul followers are planning a march from Ironforge to Stormwind on the Whisperwind server to show support for their favorite candidate. The march will begin at 8:30 PM. Depending on the route they take, this could be an extremely short march (Ironforge to train tunnel to Stormwind) or an extremely long and humorous one as dozens of Ron Paul supporters sporting newbie Gnome and Dwarf characters die in droves trying to cross the Burning Steppes. Unfortunately Whisperwind is a non-PVP server, so the worst any political opposition can do is /rude, /spit, and kek.

  • Sad, scary, or both?

  • They'll do something like this in World of Warcraft, and then the majority of those people who participate in it probably won't even vote due to raiding conflicts. Oh Sweet Irony.

  • this is almost a good idea... except the execution of the idea is bound to be extremely stupid.

  • Ron paul is great dude :! even if ideas are totally extreme in alot of cases like abolishment of RIS. Some people say , he would destroy America if he came in power which i think is untrue as 75% of bill will never get passed. But he can be great president by just doing 30% of things he talks about. All the other republican just scare me with your ideology that they have the power to do anything.

I wish he had a chance but since republican play the most dirtiest democratic politic know to man , gives him no chance of winning.

  • @mva5580: Did you actually READ the post. They ARE in WoW.

  • @GumbyX: Yeah I READ the post, did you INTERPRET what I was saying correctly?

I said that they'll formulate some sort of political statement within a video game, but then when it will come time to actually vote, a lot of those people probably won't.

Don't call someone out if you're not mentally capable of having grade school level reading comprehension.

  • They are just too lazy to go outside.

  • Imagine trying to have a political rally on COD4
it just wouldnt work for so many reasons.

  • Urgh. It figures that the Alliance would be filled with Paultards. For the Horde! (Paid for by the Horde for Barack Obama)

  • Ohh - it's great that Wow-players back this lunatic, as the only country Ron Paul is qualified to govern is an imaginary one, like Azeroth. One only needs to read four words in order to know Ron Paul is dangerously insane and can not be taken seriously - Sanctity Of Life Act.

  • ahah "WORLD OF POLICRAFT", that's a funny one.

  • Wait till the EVE universe sees my "Minmatar Miners for Kucinich" barge parade.

  • I think that a lot of his supporters fail to realize his true, incredibly racist nature. In his own words:

I realize that many people automatically marginalize dailykos, but there isn't much you can do to spin this kind of stuff.

To begin with, the President doesn't directly write legislation, and as a Libertarian leaning Republican, Paul is unlikely to find a lot of support in Congress to author his bills.

    Secondly, 75% + 30% = 105%. Thanks for playing!

  • Ron Paul is a racist faux-democrat. It's absolutely shocking that he has so much support on the internet.

  • Would just be such a great youtube video had it been on a PvP server.

  • I think this perfectly sums up the mentality of the average Paultard more beautifully than words could. It isn't serious. It's a game to them. It's a goddamn game they are playing. It's cool and lets them feel rebellious while not actually having to be rebellious (because that would involve holding unpopular opinions and thus not getting the constant positive reinforcement that their ilk crave.).

  • @kingclip:
Both. But mostly the first one.

  • He has a lot of support on the internet because you don't have to be an american to vote for him in an online poll.

  • @strobefx: It is? He's a populist, and populist also find very vocal suppporters -- even before the internet.

  • @mva5580: No way. Voting is always on Tuesday, which happens to be the same day the WoW servers go down for maintenance. Ron Paul has got it all figured out.

  • @mva5580: @GumbyX:
    mva5580 - 1, GumbyX - 0

  • I've also been seeing dozens of the ron paul retards in TF2, going on about how great he is. But they'l only answer any questions with another talking point. Most i'd bet aren't even old enough to vote yet.

  • @strobefx: it seems to be the in-thing alright.

  • @Runouthearts: I read about that (guess where?) and after that, I can't believe Paul has any support left. What a scumbag. I kind of liked him before this...well, minus is religious extremism. But now? I can't put up with a racist religious nut.

  • Ron Paul, thank you all for coming out! On to New Hampshire! FOR THE HORDE!

  • As a rabid Ron Paul fan, I have to say this is the single gayest thing I've ever heard in my life.

  • @desterion: though i think some of those pro Ron Paul TF2 players are referring to the roomba greifing videos.

  • Ron Paul is the best. But I'm sure this will be THE thing reported about him and his "rabid fan base".

What is humorous is that many people here have nothing better to do than slander with open lies here. Want to abolish the illegal income tax system? Want to withdraw from a neverending ideological war? Want to reduce big government and let free market competition rule?

He wouldn't have raised more money than any candidate this quarter if these weren't popular ideas.

  • glad i don't roll alliance on that server.

keep your poloticos out of my WoWtime, dammit! i go there to escape and relax, wtf?!

  • Someone please explain to me why people actually support this guy? He wants to abolish ALL taxes. That's impossible. He also says while simultaneously abolishing the IRS and all taxes he is going to completely pay off the national debt. How the hell is he going to do that with no taxes? You can't. You also can't fund a government with no taxes.

Giving this guy any kind of support is a waste of time. I know his ideas sound "cool" but in the long run they are all worthless and impossible. Also, when has anything that's been supported by internet folks actually been successful? Remember Snakes on a Plane. All the internet hype and then everyone that supported it on the net was too lazy to go out and see it. Same thing will happen here.

  • @strobefx: Not shocking at all. He's one of those candidates that get all hyped up on the net, but will get very few actual votes. ie, Kucinich...

  • Oh I can see it now, mocking Howard Dean.

Not only are we going to Stormwind, Tom Harkin, we're going to Ironforge and Orgrimmar and Thunder Bluff and Undercity and Darnassus, and we're going to Silvermoon City and The Exodar and Blackrock Mountain… And we're going to The Molten Core and Zul'Gurub and Gnomergan and Scholomance, and then we're going to Eastern Plaguelands to take back Stratholme! Yeaararh!!!

  • @Tsaketh:

    gay != bad

  • please keep PR out of my Kotaku. thank you.

  • @BolognaFire:

I didn't say bad. I said gay. I never implied they meant the same thing. And yes, this is the gayest thing I've ever heard.

  • er RP...@GosoVision:

  • LeeeeRon Paaaaauuullllkins

  • @Doomstink:

Well, a point that he likes to make is we did without the income tax until 1913, so really your point is without merit. We won the war of 1812, the Spanish-American War, and supported a booming economy without the income tax. If we were to cut it out, our government would have the same amount of revenue they had in 2000. So all you need to do is cut spending to year 2000 levels.

  • I may be into politics and love watching the political system do it's thing, but I ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY do NOT want people trying to campaign in something I do in my free time. If I wanted to learn more about Ron Paul... I'd go to the local loony bin and talk to the people in there, not when I'm questing (although I'm on Arthas).

  • @Tsaketh: Forgive me for beating a dead horse then, but what did you hope to convey with the term? That it has sex with concepts of the same gender?

On a more topical note: I've yet to be swept up into the cult of personality behind Ron Paul. On the basest of levels, I agree with some of his tenets, but I'll reserve final judgment on him (and every other candidate) until next year. Interesting to hear of something like this in WoW though. I'm sure I'm just uninformed, but is this march the first of its kind?

  • I've got to say... it would've been a lot more entertaining if they would've done it in a PvP area.

    A lot more entertaining.

  • /spit

  • I think Ron Paul would be less of an internet favorite if people realized he was *against* net neutrality. You know, that 'thing' that'll prevent ISP's from charging premiums for visitng certain sites. Nifty, eh? Yeah, Ron Paul is too much of a libertarian to allow that 'socialist' protection to come to fruition. Lasseiz-faire capitalism and all that.

  • @jihadjoe343: Well, that's one of the great things about an MMO, like WoW. You don't have to "play the game" and you're free to do as you please, as long as it's within TOS. I wonder if there is anything in the TOS against politics, but I wouldn't know since I say I read it without reading it. *gasp*

But I wouldn't have a problem with it as long as they don't go spamming and getting childish. I may log on just to witness this for a few minutes to see what it's like.

  • @OmegaVader:

Definitely. Ron Paul is the devil people.

  • @Doomstink: He does have good ideas, but like you've mentioned, I don't think they are well thought out.

    Here is an example:

As another posted, he's for pure free market enterprise, which in theory limits the role government can take in the market of goods and services. Free markets are a good thing if your not being impacted.

However, as another posted, Net Neutrality is completely counter to a free market, and thus would be scrapped. Without any protection, how long would comcast take to charge more for all WoW Traffic? Or Traffic to Kotaku?

The free market systems believes that if consumers are pissed, they'll take their business elsewhere, but ISP's like comcast have a near monopoly making it much harder to switch.

  • Actually, this is neat to see since this is my favorite candidate for the new presidential year. Obama and Hilary are two choices I strongly wish to avoid, either we're not ready for them or we shouldn't be due to their IQ level.

  • Does it not bother anyone that the guy is a religious nut? All his talk of abolishing taxes sounds attractive at first glance, and is a crowd-pleaser, but isn't practical in the least. His other, more ominous promise 'to restore constitution to it's original state' makes all kinds of alarms go off, given the guy's religious convictions, I'm afraid he'll just crap on the separation of church and state some more to keep on propagating the 'christian nation' myth.
Don't be single-issue voters people - research your candidates, damnit.

  • A lot of the people who "support" him online are actually joking. People vote for him in polls because it's funny, not because they actually think he'd be a good president.

Ron Paul is a big, tired joke. He is not a man, he is a catchphrase.

  • Someone must of confused "Gold Standard" with "Gold Farming."

Anyway, Ron Paul sucks. Racist, homophobic, anti-science, conspiracy-theorist, isolationist douchebag.

  • What these gamers fail to realize is that some of the biggest graphical achievements came about due to govt. supported research. Edwin Catmull, graphics pioneer and current president of Pixar, came up with the Z-buffering technique and texture-mapping (you may have heard of that technique) thanks to ARPA-funded research at the University of Utah. Can you imagine...these people may not have been able to hold a rally inside this game if the govt. had not funded such research. National Science Foundation (NSF) supported research is essential to science being propagated in this country, yet Ron Paul is against that. (Catmull is also a big proponent of govt. supported research).

And how about Google? The website all of us use the most came about to due to one of the founders being provided a NSF fellowship to Stanford. Who knows...if he never got such a fellowship we would still be stuck with Windows Live search and Hotmail (*shudder*).

So be a little thankful that the govt. gives people a chance to improve all of our lives.

  • I won't start a political dialogue here, but this alleged racism has to be addressed -- the infamous post that started that scandal cites its source as a USENET MESSAGE BOARD POSTING.

There seems to be an counter-Paul internet contingent forming, probably due to the pushiness of some Paul supporters, who sometimes act like telemarketers.

My rebellion is old-fashioned -- changing to Republican so I can vote for him in my State Primary, and working the phone bank in Spanish (a vital demographic that hasn't overwhelmingly backed any candidate yet).

  • Wow, surprised at all the RP hate.. I thought he was supposed to be the internet's candidate. If you look at most right-leaning blogs, Fred Thompson gets the most endorsements.

  • They say that a sucker is born every minute. With all the Ron Paul supporters out there, you'd think that output would have doubled or tripled in recent times. Ron Paul doesn't even believe in evolution for goodness sakes. Same thing for net neutrality. He's the same right wing tool as any of the other 7 republicans. If he ever got elected, the country would be in worse shape. Just because he is the only candidate to talk about Iraq withdrawal does not mean that he should be getting this much support. There are a lot of unrealistic, naive, buffoon libertarian pricks out there and hilariously enough, all the money and support Ron Paul gets right now will translate into electoral.....zilch. Libertarians need to understand that no one likes them and no one agrees with them. If you want to dismantle the welfare state, go build your own. The middle class of America would like to collectively tell you to fuck off.
