Was Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopoulos spot on when he said that Rock Band would be "training an army of a million drummers"? Maybe. It, at the very least, helped train one, Attack of the Show's Kevin Periera. He recently applied his 89% expert-level skills on Coheed and Cambria's "Welcome Home" to some real life Coheed and Cambria. How's he do? Well, I won't spoil it.
Okay, I will. He nails it. I have no idea how much real life drum experience Mr. Pereira's had, but if it's strictly limited to Rock Band, I'm impressed. If not, at least Kev got to rub elbows with the C&C music factory. Next time some internet d-bag asks why you don't just play a real instrument, fire back that maybe, just maybe, you will. He needs to shout into the mike more.
Still: nice drumming.
Two Rock Band stories in a row? After Still Alive is offered for free and it turns out playing drums on this game makes you awesome in real life, how can you top this?
Update: Rock Band Wii will have DLC, Proper Online, Hookers
I remember an AOTS where he faced off against some drummer from a different band and he was pretty impressive there. Don't think Rock Band did that, he was a good drummer before it came out.
Off topic, but Still Alive is free tomorrow and I reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyyyyy want Rock Band now
you can read on his blog that kevin actually plays real drums so no rockband doesnt do shit for you, besides make you feel special. but your mom still thinks your a good drummer, dont worry
Very original, fun and creative feature, for once.
I think the real drummer was kinda pissed lol.
I want rock band!
Rockband does nill, but that one konami drum simulator.. totally different story!
Well, this just makes me want rock band more. HINT HINT WHOEVER THE HELL IS IN CHARGE OF RELEASING IT IN EUROPE
The actual drummer is the weirdest person I've seen all day.
Holy SHIT! I always thought Periera was more pathetic than that!
Oh wow. Seriously. Wow.
I wish I can play rock band at least once :(
Congrats to Harmonix for such a awesome game.
@cbg2113: The drums themselves may not be accurate to a real set, but it does a hell of a lot for your sense of rhythm and getting the motions down.
As for Kevin, he plays drums in real life. I don't really watch the show anymore but back when I did a few years ago, I seem to remember him being pretty fond of his drums.
He played drums on AOTS before Rockband even cam out. So unless Rockband can not only teach you how to play drums but can also teach you how to build a time machine, this video doesn't show us anything about the ability of Rockband to teach someone how to play drums.
I think it works that if your a real drummer you can play Rockband pretty good,not vice versa..lol
best band ever by the way
He may be a passable drummer, but can he redeem G4 for ruining Tech TV? I think not. I miss Screensavers...
Them and Linkin Park were supposed to play here in El Paso. But then LP's singer got some lame herpes throat disease and canceled the tour here...
He should have played a little worse if he was going for the "I've never actually played real drums" bit.
But putting the colors on the drums, that actually made me lol, can't remember the last time G4 did that for me.
you gotta be kiddin' me
@King Seafoam:
People aren't allowed to get sick? -_-
But ya, Kevin plays drums before Rockband, but was still a nice video
That was pretty damn good drumming!
Kevin is a decent drummer and used to have a Roland V electronic drum kit.
Kevin Periera has lots of drumming experience...My buddy was in a band with him in high school.
The interesting thing for me was to hear Claudio say he only scored an 84% singing his own song. Certainly makes me feel better when FAIL flashes on the screen for some of the harder songs.
That was pretty cool!
But its kinda obvious the dude has had some real practice with drums before, since its mad hard to get good with a real kit from something like rockband alone.
If it is the real deal though the dude got some genuine talent!
If that's real then I'm the new lead drummer, guitarist and vocalist for Metalica.
You would have to be very delusional or retarded to think Rock Band can teach you anything. He is a drummer previous to Rock Band.
@Kickinstuff13:
yes, yes, so do we all. But I think it is time to movie on, my friend. There is only so long you can keep bringing that up.
Go to Revision3 or download some podcasts. It's better then TechTV, trust me.
Sure, playing the song over and over again in Rock Band would drill the rhythms, fills, and transitions into his head, but there's no way he doesn't have at least a few years of experience behind him.
@phantomlink: HELL NO they AIRNT!
anyways- got my money back and went to a sick rave a week after. haaah ;)
Does anyone else call bullshit?? There is no way that he has never drummed before.
It might help, but memorization in no replacement for actually learning how to play.
@Nobuyuki: Yep, here he is against Raymond Herrera from Fear Factory.
[www.g4tv.com]
Although I completely agree that Rockband helps to learn the basics of drumming.
I'd say that Rock Band can get you most of the way there, but not all the way. It's really good at developing the physical skills needed, but it doesn't do much to develop the mental skills.
Well, I've never drummed before, and I kick ass on Dani California, like, on a real set. So it definitely works somewhat.
Geez, Kevin Peroria is such a freaking douche bag.
He did a drum off against the drummer of fear factory like 2 years ago on tv. He's awesome at it anyway.
Pff, if it isn't Second Stage Turbine Blade, don't show me Coheed.
I can tell from experience that if you have a complete lack of rhythm in your bones, games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band help train that rhythm. After all their *gasp* rhythm-based games!
I'm getting the feeling we'll see more of these stories pouring out just like the Wii/Rehab connections.
Here we go - now Jack Thompson will use this to argue that violent games really do train kids to use weapons. mark my words!
Real drumming makes you good at Rock Band drumming. I'm not so sure that Rock Band drumming makes you any good at real drumming. Kevin definitely drummed before Rock Band, that's a given.
I think he was already a pretty good drummer to begin with.
Kevin talked about this on his own blog, and confirmed that yes, he did play drums before rock band. So ... I think the jury is still out on whether or not the game can actually make you a drummer IRL.
@King Seafoam:
Well... at least you had the chance to see them. Everytime they come to Toronto ( only place they ever go to in Canada ) theres always something going on and I cant attend... I Only got 1 chance a year to see them and it's always failed -_-
This isn't Ninja Warrior at all.
I'm offended.
So why is "Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial)" a cover?
I find it funny the he asked Chris (Coheed's current drummer) how he felt about 12 year olds being able to play his song on drums. Problem is, Chris wasn't in the band when Welcome Home came out and compared to the stuff he actually writes (Dillinger Escape Plan), he probably thinks a 12 year old could easily play it.
That was awesome, but there is no way in hell that was his first time on a real kit!
@KuromanKuro Live and PSN: ur right, I'm pretty shure he knows how to play drums.
Coheed and Cambria rock. I saw them open up for linkin park back in February.
yeah, he already knew how to play the drums before this. now what i want to see is someone learning to play the guitar from experience with the rock band ones :p
Periera ripped on the drums years and years before Rock Band ever existed.
Geez, that's pretty freaking misleading. I was feeling pretty good about myself till I read the comments about how he's pretty much a rock star already.
