German site 4Sceners.de published this weekend the first captured images of a demo for a mysterious commercial product known as Linger In Shadows, created by demoscene group Plastic. Details are virtually nonexistent on Linger In Shadows, a title Sony Computer Entertainment trademarked in November of last year. Members of the Plastic team said of the demo, which was shown at the Breakpoint 2008 gathering this weekend, that it would be released publicly on the PlayStation 3, possibly as a graphical showcase for the system, but that it was not a game in the conventional sense.
Other Breakpoint attendees teased via the Pouet.net forums that it would be somehow playable and that Linger In Shadows was one of multiple demoscene projects commissioned by Sony. We're looking into it further to learn more about the project.

oooohhh! lovely.....I hope to god its not an fps though....
Very interesting.
Those tiny screens are intriguing. It has been far too long since games invoked a sense of wonder in me.
Would be great to see it in action...
@excel_excel:
second
Looks cool.
Well, since they're saying it's not really a game...maybe it's a tech demo? Maybe it gives you a city to walk or fly around and interact with, but there's no real gameplay to it? Who knows.
Maybe it'd be a cool little PSN freebie download, just to show us all what the system's really capable of. But that title..."Linger in Shadows" has a bit of a dark side to it. I don't know. Maybe it is a game. I'll have to keep an eye and an ear open for this one.
Ok who used the Nintendog assist trophy?
Seriously its not funny.
Looks absolutely beautiful either way, definitely putting this on my watchlist. Game or not, I want to see this in action.
This is totally off topic, but can anyone tell me where I can find this certain flash game that was made by a game company (i think it's somewhere along the lines of like "dice" or something, that was the company that made it) that featured some type of character just shooting monsters with an uzi? Thanks so much! Sorry for the spam! I found the game on Kotaku, that's why I came here.
Pretty! Looks RPG-ish.
Cool, even if it's just a tech demo. It'd be a good indication of what to expect in terms of gameplay graphics in the years to come from the Sony studios.
The screenshots would be a lot more impressive in higher res though. Look mighty good, filtered and highpoly so far nonetheless.
Reminds me of SotC. Personally I'd be happy if we could just explore the city and run around in it, Prince of Persia or Assassin's Creed style. You know, do Free Running or Parkour in it, etc. Maybe even enter houses and such and mess stuff up and the stuff would stay messed up, eventually you'd trash the entire city...
Kind of like being the last person on Earth.
Want!
The 2nd image looks like the Nintendogs Assist Trophy from Brawl... and the 4th imagen looks like Kid Icarus stage from Brawl...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl HD for PS3 confirmed?
Something about this screams "Mamoru Oshii". Especially the dog funny enough. He loves the breed. But also the color palette and the... thing in the first image.
But I honestly thought these were from MGS4 at first.
@Al2x: 50 cent bulletproof *snigger*
Nah try newgrounds
I glanced at the screenshots and thought "Team Ico?"
The screens remind me of what MGS4 looks like. It has that realistic, depression type look going on. Looks awesome.
Since they're from the demoscene, it's probably a demo ( [en.wikipedia.org] ) not a "game demo."
I always found the sceners to be some of the most brilliant minds in the whole world of programming -- the way they best themselves with size limitations is astounding, spawning even playable works such as "Kkrieger," whose technology has only just begun to trickle into mainstream game code (with Spore), even 4 years after its release.
Also, they used to some beautiful stuff on my trusty ol' Amiga. *teardrop*
This seems like it would be an interesting game.
i have to see this in action. The previewers said it looked better than Crysis, Killzone 2 and MGS4 but these screenshots show nothing.

@Xideo: Yea, I thought those were MGS4 shots and according article actually until I read the headline.
Team ICO? Tell me it's so.
Strange translation with speculation abound.
"First, we fly through clouds impressive world, the volumetric forms faces shape, while the credits appear to be sound and atmospheric piano concert. Auch Xenusion wird hier natürlich genannt, der als Grafiker bei Crytek auch an Crysis beteiligt war. Also here is Xenusion course, as a graphic designer at Crytek Crysis also was involved. "
Seriously... is reality THAT green/yellow?
Man, if it ain't brown... it's green/yellow.
Can anyone find a link to a video of this? I'm just chasing links to nothing here.
murder all filters
@Indy_aka_Rex:
Artistry, creative license... Look them up.
For some reason, I'm thinking "Urban Setting Myst." If so, that would be beyond awesome.
When I skimmed and looked at the screenshots, I was mistakened in thinking it was MGS4.
If that is ICO my 360 goes back ASAP :O
@Otaconnachos:
Me too
Alright, I'm glad I'm not alone. I also thought of Team Ico as soon as I saw the screens. They seem to have the exact same tone. But, MGS4 also looked like this at one point. So, its likely something else outside of Team Ico's work. But, we won't know until an announcement, now will we? But, don't get your hopes up, just the same.
Hm, interesting. For those not versed in the demoscene, "demos" as topaz420 linked above are more of a showcase of squeezing every last drop of computing power out of a system to create spectacular visuals and audio, usually in a small package of code.
It goes to highlight how much computing resources go into modern interaction + physics engines; all of the demos I've ran and saw don't really bother with basic game stuff like collision detection or physics (beyond the simple stuff like gravity) and would rather spend the power generating complex structures or textures.
That said, we *know* the PS3 has a bunch of powerful Cell processors, so this is a smart move on Sony's part to let people who like to optimize hardware to...optimize a tricky piece of hardware. Don't expect retail games to hold these presentation values, though.

@Chopper_Mike:
Glad I'm not alone. Is that some HD E3 Smash Bros. Trailer?
@illmatic291: I think this team is actually based in Poland as the link in the article went to a .pl domain for a group called "Plastic"
Know, it's a demo-scene demo and not a game demo, but still...
From NeoGAF:
"just found this link: [www.riverwash.info]
Seems like a showcase for their new 'PICO' engine."
- InsertCredit
"PICO" engine? That sets off alarms...
haha I was thinking team Ico as well. Looks good!
@Otaconnachos: Hah, same here.
Why am I not impressed? I feel I'm wrong here. And alone.
I also thought these were new MGS4 screens. Still, this looks interesting
Linger in the Shadows does sound very Ico-y, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm up for a nice fantasy-ish rpg in europe.
Yea, more of Ps3 tech demo's that never deliver.
Eh, as much as I would love it to be Ueda and Team Ico, I don't think that's one of their next projects.
*Please be wrong!*
@7ucky: If it is from Team Ico, I would prefer it to be a real game, rather than "not a game in the conventional sense" as stated above.
Linger in Shadows.. SHADOWS OF THE COLOSSUS!!
what. the. fuck.
hope it's good at least!
Yeah, Im with the others that thought this was something about MGS4. So much goddamn brown in the pics.
@Ruglia:
You're not alone. I'm not impressed either? Why?
Because I think this creates a completely unrealistic expectation of what the console can do in an actual GAME environment. I tried to explain the difference between visual peaks between a real-time cutscene and real-time gameplay before and all I got was FLAMED. Gamers in general will see this and think "Wow, eventually PS3 games will look like THAT!" and that's just not true.
The game industry is annoying me in general with misrepresenting how games actually look in their teaser and commercial advertising by using CG instead of gameplay. Simply put, I just think this needs to stop. All it does is ultimately disappoint us when we sit down to actually PLAY a game.
Less beautiful "this is what we could do."
More "check out this awesome game" please. And it doesn't bear any resemblance to any architecture or art design in Ico/SotC. I gotta' think the only reason people are calling Team Ico on this is because it has the word 'Shadow' in the title.
...I guess the mask on the front end of the flying mechanical squid thing is a little SotCish. But not enough.
