About Nintendo Switch App (Nintendo Switch Online)

Nintendo Switch App is a companion app that connects your phone with your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. It does not substitute any console capabilities but enlarges them when at other times you are not holding the device. The app lets you view what your friends are up to, check the availability of your friends, add new friends, and use social features, all on your phone. It also allows you to capture screenshots and video clips on your Switch 2 and watch them on your phone, which is easier to share compared to carrying them manually in the first place.

The app also offers game-specific services for some of the Nintendo games. Such services offer additional information, statistics, features, and tools depending on the game. To illustrate, in Splatoon 3, it is possible to see stage rotations and battle statistics, whereas in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it is possible to guide or share schematics through QR codes. Depending on the title, the utility of the app differs, providing Switch users with a means of being in touch with their gaming action without necessarily switching on the console.

The Nintendo Switch App is available for download for Android and iOS devices, for free.

What Are the Key Features of Nintendo Switch App?

The application has both universal and game-specific features. One of them is friend-list management, which allows you to see who is online, be notified when friends have logged in, and add friends via QR codes or friend codes.

The second feature is the ability to access the screenshots and videos made on your Switch and Switch 2. You can share them, watch them in the application, or add them to the picture gallery of your phone, and it is not difficult to share the gameplay highlights. The game-specific services are the most distinctive ones.

Zelda titles,  such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, provide direction to get to the unexplored zones and share schematics. Splatoon games, as Splatoon 3, offer game schedules, statistics, friend status, and leaderboard information. Players of Animal Crossing: New Horizons can send personal designs, see online statuses of Best Friends, and send in-game messages using their phone. Players of Smash Bros, like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, can watch posts and media, reserve personal stages, and read information about events.

This integration is not present in all games, but those games that do provide an additional level of interaction outside the console.

Is Nintendo Switch App Free to Use?

Yes. The application is free to download and use. Functionalities can be accessed only with a Nintendo Switch Online membership, like friend status check, friend request, and screenshot or video view, which are not provided by a subscription. Here, all you need is a Nintendo Account.

Which Platforms Support Nintendo Switch App?

You can download the Nintendo Switch App from the Google Play Store (Android) and the Apple App Store (iOS) for free. The application is compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch, provided you are linked to a registered Nintendo Account. It does not require a Switch Online membership to install.

The application requires an internet connection to access real-time capabilities like monitoring the online status of friends or some game-specific applications. Due to the application dealing with screenshots and video transfers, there will be a need to have some storage space on your phone, should you intend to keep a lot of files.

What Are the Best Alternatives to Nintendo Switch App?

Nintendo Store App is aimed at browsing, buying, and exploring Nintendo content, as opposed to managing social capabilities. It allows its users to browse both digital and physical goods and game listings, and purchase titles straight to their Nintendo Account. Although it does not have the game-specific integrations of the Switch App, it can be used to track sales, new releases, and preorder opportunities. Purchases are connected with the player’s library. It is a good companion in the marketplace, but not a substitute for gameplay or managing friends. If you want to explore more apps like these, you can always download their official companions to see which one fits your style best.

The PlayStation App by Sony is analogous to a console companion application. It enables players to view their friends online, their current game, chat with them through messages, navigate the PlayStation Store, and remotely download games on their consoles. Users are able to access captured screenshots and videos in case they log in using their PSN account. It also has a better array of social features and is closely embedded into the PlayStation ecosystem, making it a viable choice as a companion experience on a good console. Some players even download multiple ecosystem apps at once just to compare features and find what works smoothly for them.

The Xbox App is compatible with mobile and PCs, which allows users to access their Xbox friends, notifications, messages, and remote play. The most important is the possibility to watch games played on the Xbox console directly on a smartphone, which is not available on the Switch App. It also allows users to navigate the Xbox Store, download, capture, and stay abreast of events or Game Pass titles. The application is also heavy-handed in features as compared to the light-minded approach by Nintendo, providing a combination of remote compatibility and management capabilities in a single location. It also helps to download any extra companion tools that enhance notifications, gameplay insights, or store access.
