Over on the UK PlayStation site they've laid out the details on firmware 2.10, which should be releasing tomorrow according to the date listed with the article. Among the interesting new features is a voice changer, with the power to make you sound like a person using a voice changer with five presets over hi and low tones. Other features include a new music bitmapping process specifically designed for the PS3 to provide enhanced audio playback, support for Blu-ray disc profile 1.1 for picture-in-picture goodness, and the long-awaited support for DivX and WMV playback. DivX playback is limited to non-copyrighted material under 2GB, and DivX 3.11 and earlier encoding is not supported. Unfortunately XviD is still not supported, which means that people with a large number of anime fansubs (not naming any names here) will have to stick to computer viewing for the time being. *sigh*

Voice Changer? Whaaaa?! Cos that was sooo popular on original Xbox Live.
You can convert anything to mpeg4, I do. and my ps3 plays them great from my mac when I use twonky.
Nice im very interested to see how well profile 1.1 works on the ps3 sense it doesnt have the second video processor. Im guessing we get it emulated on the hard drive.
First disc hits state side on January 1st. Resident Evil: Extinction.
the're just begging for PS3 to be hack lol
Hell ya. Bring it on!
So this was the best divx playback in the market they were talkinng about? Humm, I see.
play back is limited to non-copyrighted material under 2 gig?
I think there's more to viewing fansubs that xvid. I have a Samsung that supports xvid that won't play them at all but I also have an Oppo that plays them beautifully upconverted to 1080P. Kinda shocking that they actually look so good.
does the 360 play xvid and files over 2GB?
@gwangi: Yes it does
lol, voice changer. That didn't go down that well on the Xbox.
@invictus2006:
probably to prevent people from playing back High Def movies from their Hard disks(pirated or not).
Wouldn't want that eating into blu-ray discs sales like its done for the PSP and umd eh?
@ShaggyB: I would think they're using one of those..whatever they're called.. Cell sub-processors to output the second video signal.. I would think.
Other features include a new music bitmapping process specifically designed for the PS3 to provide enhanced audio playback
Does this mean bit-perfect audio? Unless I'm just way behind here, that's a pretty major audiophile feature.
@charsuipau:
True
I use TVersity, it can convert xvid and most common codecs on the fly and stream it to my PS3 or 360. Native support for more codecs and file formats is cool though. Xvid support would be nice, but don't count on either sony or microsoft supporting it anytime soon.
who ever has a DivX File over 2Gb?
might as well just copy the DVD....?
2 threads one on giz and this one...is there a way to cross post them so those of us who love and cherish both sites don't have to post redundantly?
[gizmodo.com]
or if it gets you more hit counts I can always read both...I love and support you guys =)
/overlord bootlicking
Although unlikely, the 2GB limit could be a file system limitation. I know a lot of older formats (like Fat 16 and HFS) can't handle files over 2GB.
Also, if the Cell processor can't handle two video streams at once, it can't be the powerhouse everyone touts it to be. I don't think PIP features on high def discs are both 1080p anyway. That would be a huge waste of space. 480p would be plenty if it's just a portion of the screen.
I thought XviD can be decoded by a DivX decoder... isn't that how it works on 360?
Anyone know?
@charsuipau: Actually, it probably has more to do with the filesystem. It probably has a 2Gb file size limit. (I bet it works fine with streaming.)
i use tversity to transcode to my ps3 but some of my files won't work hoping the divx and wmv fixes that. Bonus i dl a lot of trailers and other crap from game trailers and 90% of their hd content is WMV,
@greeble:
"DivX playback is limited to non-copyrighted material under 2GB"
according to the post so I assume it allows copyrighted material over 2gb to playback.
@Astrofox: additional codec same as PC...just bundled extra codec in on PC and Xbox I am pretty sure.
@greeble: I'm not too sure if thats the issue, but its plausible. I think its more of a counter piracy type thing. 360 has the same limit IIRC. but like another poster said, if you have a divx file over 2GB you should just own the dvd.
@greeble:
Oh never mind just read the website yeah its Just files over 2gb who knows the reason why.
@charsuipau:
nope these have been stated as limiting factors inclusively. so nothing over 2GB AND nothing copyrighted from what I have read so far.
@dashyt2dafulliz:
360 limits at 4GB
Yea, i still use TVersity to stream DivX/XviD to my 360... just cause i have a bunch >_> and i don't want to chance some of em not working. Not only that... but it took me a while to set it up (stupid mistakes on my behalf... but still), so its the principle of the matter :p
@charsuipau:
No, it is limited to playing back files under 2GB. Copyrighted or not.
Still no Xvid support. Can't play files over 2GB. Can't play copy-righted material.
Those seem to be the only major limitations. No Xvid support is a downer. The 2GB file limit can be a problem in a few situations. Not being able to play copy-righted material will suck for those trying to obtain videos legitimately.
voice changer.....another reason not to go online with the PS3,i can never understand what people are saying when they have their voice changed to sounding like metal mickey...now every man and his dog will be selecting this!!
360 Doesnt recognize NTFS external hard drives, only FAT32. The biggest any file can be on a FAT32 partition is 4GB.
You can get around the limitation 2 ways.
1. Format your external hard drive in HFS+ format using a program like MacDrive.(HFS+ is the Mac file format and there is no 4GB limitation on files)
2.Stream it from a shared folder which has Windows Media Player 11 installed.
voice changer?
how interesting...
with get enough people, we can recreate entire Scream trilogy....
Now riddle me this. When I update my 360 twice a year, it takes like 30 seconds. When I update my PS3 like 20 times a year, it takes 20 minutes or longer.
Can anyone tell me why that is? It gets annoying. I mean it's ok. I can do something else during that time. I am genuinely curious why it takes so much longer to do what seems externally to be similar stuff.
hopefully, it'll cut back on adolescent voice syndrome
@Seiven: Nope. Both DivX and Xvid are part of the MPEG 4 standard. You can install either codec on you PC and decode video of both formats to varying degrees of success. The Xbox 360 doesn't have DivX or Xvid codecs but rather has MPEG 4 capability.
eh the divx thing isn't significant. mp4/and mpeg2 /dvd is still going to be more useful... because of file size. limitations
but bluray1.1 yay, bring on the webcontent.
@metallicorphan: I will not be selecting this. I have asked my dog, and based on his lack of response, I will consider him 'undecided.'
Sounds like an awesome update
@superberg:
The PIP feature is a BluRay 1.1 feature and has nothing to do with the cell processor.
@Agies: thank you for the clarification.
@epionx111:
internet content is profile 2.0 only according to a few sources I have read so this will add PIP only. anybody confirm?
@lionkitten: Because 360 just patches things while PS3 wipes its OS and Re-installs it practically? I dunno, thats what I'd assume. Its what the PSP does. So why not PS3.
What I said about 360 is only what I think, not fact, but it makes sense.
@lionkitten:
Because the 360 updates are only a few megabytes in size while the PS3 updates are much much larger.
What's with the no XviD stuff? I thought that any DivX decoder like this would be able to handle XviD files more or less as a matter of course.
This is sux beyond measure. I have no idea why they are limiting it under 2gb and where the heck is xvid.
I have tons of anime fansub with xvid formats.
I guess I'll stick with my 360 for now.
Ditch the damn voice changer its just a dumb idea. I can see it now PSN/Home will be filled with people sounding either like Darth Vader or Stuart Little.
but how does it know it is copyrighted? wmv? so that works too?
@VakeroRokero:
pretty sure no .wmv support after all wouldn't they have to ask M$ for that?
"and the long-awaited support for DivX and WMV playback." so that's a typo? I knew Sony wouldn't reach for the wallet...
@Playstation: Because sony has ALWAYS been like this. Limiting full screen video on the PSP, Overpricing UMD movie. They want to make money off video sales, why do you think they have Blu-ray? They want to sell games AND movies.
@lionkitten: Because the PS3 is early in its life, and due to the OS size problems, most updates have also featured major overhauls with the OS, requiring complete rewrites. That is why the XMB speeds up after every update[startup time, file access, etc] Im sure once everything is sorted out we wil get small patches instead of a complete OS each update.[…i hope]
