Wii And PS2 Get Rock Band Track Packs In July

PlayStation 2 Rock Band owners have to be sick of playing the same songs over and over again by now, and with Wii owners eagerly awaiting the June 22nd release of the game, the question of delivering downloadable content to the online-handicapped systems is finally being addressed - offline.

MTV Games, Harmonix, and EA will be releasing the Rock Band Track Pack Volume 1 for the PS2 and the Wii on July 15th. $29.99 at your local game purveyor nets you an additional 20 songs for the game, chosen from the DLC already available on the PS3 and 360. It's an okay mix I suppose, with some of my favorites - NIN's "March of the Pigs", Faith No More's "We Care A Lot", and Weezer's "Buddy Holly", but I much prefer being able to pick and choose my songs rather than be handed a chunk all at once.

I am going to assume these packs are standalone, going by the size of the files and both systems lacking a hard disk. Still, more Rock Band fun is more Rock Band fun, right? Hit the jump for the full track listing, and see where you fall between delighted and disappointed.

  • Where's Peace of Mind?
    gah.

  • Should be PS3 and 360 there. Still, I found myself more interested in GH than I was with Rock Band.

  • I just wish they'd allow bulk purchase discounts on DLC. Sure, there is some with the packs, but they could do more volume discounting and make more sales. I just got Rock Band and there is about $40 worth of DLC I definitely want. I could easily see myself spending up to $50 if I could get some discounts. Like, say if you get 10 singles, there is a discount. Maybe, buy 8 get 2 free. Likewise on the packs. Buy 3, get one free. See, I don't necessarily mind this PS2 purchase format where a new disc brings a big chunk of material at a lower per cost price. I just wish they could do that more comprehensively in the DLC.

  • *takes a whiff*

    Needs more Blondie...and "Wonderwall"

  • the price isn't great, but at least they'll get new songs. i bet they dig it. ill chill with my +150 songs, tho. so pricey, tho.

  • No Metallica or Sabbath!? Man, I feel bad for the HD-less...

  • At least they are trying to throw these console owners a bone. Decent songs, a kinda decent price. I'm still happy with my 360 version purchase though.

  • It'll be interesting to see what they include on this disc. I imagine they have to have some basic single player mode (just quickplay vs. career?)

If I only had PS2 or Wii I'd be all over this disc, 30 bucks for 20 songs is what...$1.50 a song? Not too bad.

There are some tracks on here I would likely not buy as standalones, but there are a number of songs on there I do like and would be willing to purchase this disc to play.

@supercrap: HMX is very wise. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. It'll be interesting to see how often they do this for Wii and PS2.

I just hope when time comes for the 360 and PS3 to get expansion discs they don't do the same collection of DLC and rather bring in new songs. (It's coming, we all know it's coming...)

  • Definitely a good selection out of what's been offered for DLC. To be honest, I'm really surprised they're actually doing this for Wii and PS2.

  • @TRT-X: It's only $1.50 a song if you like every song.

  • If they did that on the other systems I'd probably pick up the whole set - base system, instuments, and expansion packs.

One thing they do not need to rip off from Konami is "append discs," but I'm confident they wouldn't do that simply for the loads of people who would return them when the disc won't run on its own.

  • Well this is an alright band aid for Wii owners disgruntled about Rock Band...and I'm actually OK with this.

  • I'd prefer to buy songs on an expansion disc than individually as downloadable content, and hope they do so for PS3/360, I still like physically owning a copy of software...

  • I hate to say it like this, but having this DLC and actually being able to OWN it is a huge benny, I HATE buying something that I can't share, and something that is crippled with DRM so I'm not even sure that *I* will be able to use it.

  • ... no still alive? That blows...

  • @Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc: I don't like every song on this disc.

But I also don't like every song on the original release, either.

  • well, its better than nothing i suppose. id rather have sd card content, but whatever

  • @Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc: No, it's 1.50 regardless of if you like the song or not. It's more of how much value you're getting from that 1.50. Some tracks, that 1.50 is gone and wasted, you're still getting product, it's just junk you don't really want.. because you have to take it to get product you do. The bigger question is, is there enough you like to offset the stuff you don't at the price given.

  • uuuuughhh. i always wondered if they'd do this. hmmmm, if I don't have my PS3 by then, i'll buy it; just so my son and I have more tunes to play (almost 5 and the kid can beat me on a few songs on hard...i don't know whether to be proud of him or ashamed of myself...)

  • To the people who mention they prefer expansion disk over DLC, do you guys realize an expansion disk will require you to swap the disk all the time? I sure would not want that given the choice...

  • $30 for 20 songs is a little much. I really want new songs but I wish the price wasn't that high.

  • Image of DaiMacculate DaiMacculate at 12:33 PM on 05/05/08 *

@valerian: Do we know for sure that disc-swapping will be required after the initial load? Usually on the PS2 in the past with games like this (Dynasty Warriors XL games come to mind) being expanded you just had to put in the disc one time to load the extra content. Might be different with Rock Band, of course.

  • Wait a minute.

When GH 80's was released with 30 songs for $40 or $50 depending, it was a ripoff.

Now 20 songs for $30 is A-OK when its Rock Band?

God I love the smell of hypocrisy.

  • This is what I figured would happen with Rock Band on HDD-less consoles. for those who are complaining, since each individual song is $2 on XBL/PSN, the retail version is actually going for $10 less than the download version. Plus the retail cost has the whole shipping and packaging shenanigans, so this is a pretty good bargain. Hey, if you don't like it, you can pick up a 360 or PS3, or you could just suck it up and live with your decision.

To avoid flaming from console fanboys I'm currently Wii60 and thoroughly enjoy both. I'm also getting a PS3 for graduation, so yeah.

  • MEH!
I have no intention of buying rock band, but I can't help but wonder just how much the PAL regions are going to be gouged for this if it is eventually released over here.
I'm guessing the 20 songs will cost £30 ,($60 ish.)

  • Looks like they're going for all masters with this and the on-disc bonus songs for Wii.

That's a shame, as it means that Wii/PS2 owners miss out on My Sharona, which was a cover, but is a blast on guitar.

  • Hey, it's better than nothing. Plus with Weezer, Pumpkins, and Wolfmother, they could have done much worse.

  • @valerian:
Yes. I'm used to it from Konami's games that inspired Guitar Hero in the 90s - they were the worst for it because you couldn't even run the expansions by themselves. Some like Beatmania also had intricate swap patterns where if you swapped core versions and append discs in the right order you could unlock more songs. (It had some stupid weakness I forget though... like whatever game you use to host the append disc would hold save data for that disc so you'd have to use it consistently? Is that right?)

But do you realize those discs would allow me to buy a new [PS2/Wii/anything such a disc exists for] in ten years, pop it in and play? How can you do that with DLC that's only hosted while the game is profitable?

I'll take a few stinkers with the good songs in order to assure permanence.

    @taidan19:
hahaha... that's because Guitar Hero eats babies and Rock Band makes dreams come true. ;)

  • I would actually want them to release this for the PS3... i have a wii and a PS3 and no rockband yet, but in Mexico sony doesn't let me pay for DLC, and i would want the complete version of rockband.

It's a shame, really, because most of what interest me on the PS3 are the donloadable games and the add on content, and being unable to purchase them because i don't have a US credit card in my mexican ps3 it's kind of lame. Also not being able to play online without saying that i'm from the US sucks a lot.

So, make it happen, harmonix. i want expansion disks on rockband ps3

  • @Slap Bet: Thank you.

  • No Jukebox Hero? What the shit!?

  • I wish they'd release these for PS3 and 360. 30 bucks for 20 songs is way better than the going rate on XBL and PSN.

  • Thirty bucks?!

I'd like it if they added the songs the same way Singstar and Beatmania did it - by inserting the new disk when prompted. Does Rock Band have that feature?

  • The lack of Still Alive makes me sick to my stomach.

  • @Boy Howdy: Vol. 2 will be out by the end of the year...

That is, if they haven't already annouced a full-on expansion disc for all consoles by then.

    Speaking of more songs:

  • @Dave Silva:

I also want to know this, are the discs appendable or not?

  • So whens the 360 disk coming out. Cause there is no way I'm paying money to download a song.

  • If I had only the Wii version, this would be a great deal. I like most of those songs and have bought most of them on my version. Also, it seems what they did was take the 20 best-selling songs, however also excluding repeats from one band so what you get is the 20 best selling songs and for the bands on there, the song that sold best for them.

  • Joker and the Thief is one of my favorite full band songs, there's a bit of a challenge for everybody and the song just plain rocks.

  • I've purchased over 60 songs, they should give a discount or bundle them or something. Like, "Buy 5 songs save $3".

Also, I've been wondering what would happen if out of curiosity you put Rock Band PS2 in a PS3. Would it work?

  • I totally don't own/play Rock Band, but this is pretty cool of them to release more tracks for the "no DLC" consoles. Actually, I only own a Wii and a PS2, so this would be right up my alley..if I played the game :-)

  • @taidan19:

GH80's weren't all master tracks, now were they? And it was only guitar, not guitar, bass, vocals, and drums.

  • @taidan19: I can see a couple of justifications that people will use:

    1) These're all master tracks. 80's has a few masters but are mostly covers.
    2) Three note charts and a singing path vs. two note charts.
    3) This is properly being billed as an expansion pack and priced the way an expansion pack would be; 80's, while cheaper per song, was priced as a full Guitar Hero game (solus edition, natch) would be. (As a matter of fact, on Amazon, 80's is still a full $10 more than either the GH1 or 2 solus.)

  • This makes me happy. I am to broke to afford a 360 or a PS3 (having a family to support). I had been hoping Harmonix would do something like this for a while now. Coulda had more songs, but hey, I will take what I can get!
