Not the best day to officially announce any game without the word 'Gears' in the title, but I suppose that's what magazines are for. Today THQ makes the next-generation debut of Red Faction official, announcing Red Faction: Guerrilla in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC. The third game in the series returns us to Mars 50 years after the events of the original game, with a terra-formed red planet ready to be taken apart piece by piece by the player. The focus on destruction returns, along with an all-new third-person perspective that seems like an odd choice to me, but Volition President Mike Kulas seems confident enough.
"With a new 3rd person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we're excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms."Red Faction: Guerrilla is due out sometime in 2009.

About Red Faction: Guerrilla
Red Faction: Guerrilla is a 3rd person, open-world action shooter set on Mars, 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction. Players will take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Throughout their fight for freedom, players will carve their own path, wreaking havoc across the vast, open-world environment of Mars, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos. Utilizing improvised weapons, explosives and re-purposed mining equipment and vehicles, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to tear through fully destructible environments in an unforgiving Martian landscape swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire. Red Faction: Guerrilla will also feature a robust multiplayer component, including several modes focused on destruction-based gameplay. Currently in development for Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PLAYSTATION 3, and Windows PC, Red Faction: Guerrilla is expected to ship to retailers worldwide in THQ's fiscal year 2009.

I just want to know. Will I get a real Geo-Mod this time.??
Like shoot 1000 rockets to reach china and whatnot.
So they are going to try to give it the Gears of War treatment.
Ehh, I was never really that impressed with the Red Faction games anyways.
ya i just got my issue of GI yesterday, im not too excited about this game but Aliens looks really cool
I'm glad it's third person now. I'm getting a little burnt out on First person.
Cool, looking forward to this
I remember when my friend got the demo for Red Faction 1 on his PC Gamer demo disk... we played that demo for hours... it was amazing. We kept blowing up that bridge the tank goes over... it was mind blowing.
@Joeshie: Yea, you cannot imagine the disappointment when the walls started to show a white cartilage and just stopped breaking. A bridge collapse here and there was neat, but what a disappointing engine. I didn't even bother to try the second one.
As long as they keep that bad ass geo-engine or whatever they called it, this game will be awesome.
Also, the "full-cover" system bothers me..I mean in general..how the hell can you still see enemies when you're behind cover!?
"With a new 3rd person perspective, a full cover system"
What the hell is a cover system useful for when the whole point of the game is that you can blow through the scenery?
I never liked the old ones but this one might be good since next gen tech is a lot better so if they really flesh out the geometric destruction otherwise it'll be a little bit of a wasted oppertunity. The new cover system seems to be being adopted by a few games nowadays. I guess Gears did sell a lot though.
@Ollivander: I'm the other way, I lost interest when I read it was going to be a large world objective-based third person affair. Because honestly, I'm more tired of those than I am of FPS games.
Hells to the yeah...I have very fond memories of RF 2 mulitplayer :)
The only thing I remember about the first Red Faction was the jailbreak sequence, where you had NPCs yelling that ridiculous "RRRRREEEEEEDDDD FACTION!" revolutionary war cry.
@Ockeroid: LOL. Very true, very true.
Being able to blow up cover and the terrain around it sounds cool to me, and with so many FPS games I'm glad to see another shooter go third person.
Hopefully they'll be able to ad more to the game so that it doesn't feel like a Gears clone.
How good of them to announce a game we've known about for a week now.
2009 is to far away for me to get excited, when it comes to this game anyway.
Red Faction games have always been less than fun in my opinion. I guess I'd rather have a compelling story, characters and fun gameplay then being able to dig a hole in the dirt.
@Luke Plunkett: I knew about this four years ago. I saw a little piece of paper somewhere and on it was scribed "Red Faction 3". It's just I kept it secret. You couldn't keep it to yourself. Next time they have stuff to divulge, they'll do it to me, the 'secret keeper'.
Destructible environments are still extremely rare. They introduced the real thing on Red Faction years ago and they are just now bringing it back?
@Kilbe: What's NOT fun about digging hole in the ground?!? :D
@HurricaneDave: My thoughts exactly. I sure hope not. Originality, people!
@Ricehead: Outside, for real, sure, give me a good mud hole any day!
Third Person is the new First Person.
@Kilbe:
"I guess I'd rather have a compelling story, characters and fun gameplay then being able to dig a hole in the dirt."
How often to you get compelling story, characters and fun gameplay all in one game? How many games have you played, five?
Someone tell Luke to update his post about the supposedly 'fake' screenshots.
First Red faction was awesome, Second was a huge disappointment (the only reason I played the whole thing was because you could play on PS2 with keyboard/mouse.
And now they are going 3rd person? They better squeeze every bit of power out of these systems for the geo-mod if they want to save this one. Breaking down a wall in real time with a hammer might make me play it.
I was checking out the screens in the issues of Game Informer I just got in the mail. It looks like they are returning to the concept from the first game: Mars Mining Facility. Which is awesome and in no way related to Gears of War.
I really hope they go all out in this game and make everything destructible. Or at least mostly everything....
@SavageSalad: I have played five games since November that fall into that category, but fun is subjective. Also, I didn't overtly state that a game should have all three but rather was implying any of those above digging in the dirt would be a better choice for me. Perhaps an "or" instead of an "and" would have made you happier? Doubtful.
So the screenshots were real? Best. Game. Ever.
@Kilbe: What, you didn't like Digger?
Oops, I meant DigDug
@whiptcracker: HAHA ok ok, you got me there!
I'm just happy Volition is handling it. RF2 was fun diversion but its was nothing like the original.
Now I just wish to hell they'd do Freespace 3
Please gods of gaming, let it use DMM.
@NotAZombie: Negative, only the one you see above is real. I'm pretty sure that was already covered in another post a couple days ago. But hey, I could be wrong. It's a shame they moved to third person, I was part of a Red Faction community for the PC for a good 5 years (it's still running now, but hardly any of us play the game itself anymore). We were looking forward to getting everyone back together in Red Fation: Guerrilla, but I guess that won't be happening now since it's not an FPS.
Factions Of War anyone?Or Gears of Red?
Meh,either way i cant wait.I loved the first one (meh to the second one in everything bar multiplayer)
Sweet. Let's just hope it's more like the first game than the second.
@Kilbe
Yeah, it would've made me happier. But you made me sad...
Wait.
Wasn't this announced in game informer, like a week ago?
Because it was in mine, the one with the Alien game on the cover.
@TheCleaningGuy: Now that I've read the comments, I feel stupid.
Red Faction... Huh... I missed this game but i sorta not liking that its a 3rd person perspective.
3rd person? Meh. What a crazy move. The first Red Faction did it for me with a split-screen multiplayer level with 2 opposing bases, where you could fire rockets at about 85% from the ground (i.e. near vertical) and they would come back down in a barrage at your opponent's base. This made for some crazily tactical gaming. In the second one, the same tactic did not work as they would hit a "solid sky" and not come down. Shame.
I will always prefer 1st person games to 3rd person as they feel more "real". Disappointed with this approach, am I.
It's a shame Red Faction 2 is completely different to Red Faction 1 and had absolutely nothing to do with the original except the name. The Multiplayer was a blast though, I loved making little tunnels.
@Ollivander:
My thoughts exactly! I'm tired of the FPS games. I want some more diversity for once. 3rd person Red Faction sounds like a nice change up for once.
When I first played Gears, all I could think about was how cool it would be with destroyable terrain. Think about it, you can shoot someone through their cover, given enough time....
Consider me excited.
Personally if the geomod type of engine / gameplay is still kept in mind for the series Id much rather have a FPV so I can properly see what Im doing, instead of a TPV.
Hmmm, better hardware plus Geomod. Might actually work this time.
I hope they go back to what made the first RE special. Third person, cover, and an open world sounds like a radical shift but, who knows. Maybe they'll be geniouses with contextual events. Either way, I'm probably going to buy this.
For all of you making dumbass Gears of War jokes, cover systems have been in place long before Gears came around.
Really worried with the 3rd person, hopefully it still turns out alright.
