Over the last few weeks, a few different PlayStation 5 emulators have announced accelerated progress. In particular, KytyPS5 can now boot up and run some 3D games. It can now even boot up Grand Theft Auto V’s… menus. But progress is progress, and with Sony starting a war against physical media in the eyes of some players and no GTA 6 PC port announced yet, a PS5 emulator arms race is currently happening.

As reported by Videocardz, KytyPS5 can now boot up the PS5 version of GTA V and reach the menu and settings. The emulator can’t yet play GTA V, which wouldn’t be particularly useful anyway as GTA V has a native PC port, but it shows how much progress the team is making. And because Grand Theft Auto 6 is using similar Rockstar-produced tech, it’s possible the work to get GTA V up and running on the emulator could help the devs in getting the upcoming sequel running on KytyPS5. Though I imagine Take-Two and Rockstar’s lawyers won’t be happy about that.

KytyPS5 can also run the PS5 versions of Quake 2, Pac-Man World, and Powerwash Simulator. This doesn’t mean the emulator can run these games perfectly or that you can play them to completion, but it does show that KytyPS5 is progressing toward the ultimate goal of being able to play full 3D, retail PS5 games.

According to the devs, the goal right now is to improve compatibility and boot-up issues. The team will later focus on making sure games run without visual errors and at proper frame rates. It is unlikely that KytyPS5 will be very useful to folks wanting to play backups or homebrew games anytime soon, considering the best PS4 emulator out there, ShadPS4, can only sort of run around 15 percent of the console’s library after a decade of development.

But, as pointed out by Videocardz, likely because of GTA 6 skipping PC and Sony killing physical games, emulator devs seem motivated to start tinkering more and more on PS5 emulation. Projects like SharpEmu, KytyPS5, and RPCSX have all shared decent progress in recent weeks.
