There Are Finally New PixelJunk Games, And They’re Both Terrific

For a lovely few years during the heyday of the Playstation 3 we got a steady drip of new PixelJunk games. They were usually really good. Now, after a seven-year (mostly) dry spell, we’ve got two more. In the last couple of weeks, the Kyoto-based Q-Games has released PixelJunk Eden Obscura for cell phones and…

I Hope They Don’t Bring Back Smash 4‘s Stupidest Mode

On the eve of a new Super Smash Bros. game, it’s time to reflect on the sins of past Smashes. We can quibble over whether Bayonetta should have been in Smash 4. We can beef about Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s infuriating tripping mechanic. Or we could explore some less-trod Smash territory, something so idiosyncratic and…

Conan Exiles Struggles With Unmoderated Griefing, Racism

Conan Exiles officially launched last month, and was playable in early access for more than a year before that. Unfortunately, the game still contains no means of reporting other players for griefing, abuse, or racism. H1Z1 On PS4 Is A Great Alternative To Fortnite

Anthony Bourdain Showed Me The World

Anthony Bourdain was a man who made me curious about the world and more empathetic to the people who inhabit it. My mother showed me Anthony Bourdain’s Food Network show A Cook’s Tour when I was a teenager. She had already latched onto the mythology of Bourdain as brash and talented chef, and had given…

Playing Overcooked Can Tear People Apart And, Thankfully, Bring Them Together

Overcooked is a co-op game that brings together up to four friends, family members, and/or foes to cook, prep, and serve a myriad of delicious meals against the clock. When I bought it, I did not fathom that it could potentially ruin all of my relationships by forcing us to work together. And so I…
