CultureMorning MusicSay Whatcha Wanna About Final Fantasy XIII, You Can’t Deny Its Amazing Soundtrack
Welcome to Morning Music, Kotaku’s ongoing hangout for folks who love video games and the cool-ass sounds they make. Today we’re continuing to indulge my terminal case of Final Fantasy brain with a deep dive into Final Fantasy XIII’s mold-breaking soundtrack. I’m not here to discuss the merits of Final Fantasy XIII (playlist / longplay / VGMdb) itself,…

CultureKotaku Game DiaryI Hope This Final Fantasy XIV NPC Finally Got To Take A Dump
One meets a variety of NPCs while playing Final Fantasy XIV. Some can be pretty annoying—looking at you, Thancred—while others are instantly memorable. A poor Ishgardian sentry who desperately needs to find a bathroom while her country is being invaded by dragons falls into the latter category. At the beginning of Final Fantasy XIV’s patch…

CultureFinal Fantasy XIV‘s Next Expansion Drops This Fall With A New Healing Class
During tonight’s Final Fantasy XIV showcase, Square Enix announced its next expansion, Endwalker, for release this fall. As usual, the update includes a bunch of stuff, the most noteworthy being the enigmatic Sage, the first new healing-focused job since the Astrologian was added to the MMORPG in 2015’s Heavensward expansion. Final Fantasy XIV players will…

CultureOdds and EndsA Traveler’s Guide To The Best Final Fantasy Worlds To Live In
I’m a few days past my Final Fantasy XV blitz and I’m still enmeshed in a quagmire of feelings and emotions. Since finishing the game, I watched Kingsglaive the prequel movie, I’ve considered re-watching the prequel anime, and I’m one retail therapy session away from buying the novel. I’ve already raided Etsy looking for cute…

CultureOdds and EndsFinal Fantasy XV Could Have Had A Much Better Villain
There are a lot of things I love about Final Fantasy XV. Its tale of brotherhood is bar none and representative of some of the best “it’s the little things” storytelling I’ve ever experienced in a video game. But there are, of course, elements I don’t like. In particular, the game’s villain. Final Fantasy XV’s…

CultureKotaku Game DiaryToo Fast Too Fantasy XV, Finale: I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends
Last night, after just over a week of daily playing, I finished Final Fantasy XV. And I realize now why I stopped so near the end during my first run some five years ago. It was a defense mechanism, my body’s way of protecting itself from the emotions that are going to utterly ravage me…

CultureKotaku Game DiaryA Final Fantasy XIV Player Paid It Forward By Giving Me Money For New Clothes
Speaking to people online can be fraught with miscommunication, but a recent interaction in Final Fantasy XIV made my week. A much more experienced player, out of nowhere, dropped a few thousand gil in my pockets to upgrade my wardrobe. I started playing Final Fantasy XIV on the last day of my holiday break after…

CultureGame Pass Is Still Missing Most Of The Final Fantasy Games Microsoft Promised
At the end of 2019, Microsoft announced 10 Final Fantasy games would come to Game Pass in the following year. At the start of 2021 most of them are still missing, though Microsoft says they’ll get there eventually. During the X019 livestream event in London near the tail end of 2019, Microsoft announced a bunch…

CultureOdds and EndsYoshitaka Amano’s Harley Quinn Cover Is So Good I’m Gonna Cry
Stephanie Phillips, writer on DC Comics’ upcoming Harley Quinn comic series, recently shared an excellent variant cover from the first issue, provided by none other than legendary Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano. I’m not much of a comic reader these days but, damn, if this isn’t a tempting reason to get back into them. Amano…

CultureFinal Fantasy XIV’s final update of 2020, Futures Rewritten patch 5.4, launches on December 8. Along with new dungeons, main story quests, and trials, the patch adds Explorer Mode, which lets players explore dungeons and take screenshots without worrying about getting murdered by enemies. I’m down for some of that.
