A hacker has knocked GayGamer.net, the only news gathering gay-gaming site, offline with a series of denial of service attacks after flooding the site with threatening emails and hate speech, the site's owner said Sunday.
Flynn De Marco, the site's owner and Kotaku weekend editor, said small waves of denial of service attacks started Wednesday morning, causing occasional timeouts on the site. By Friday the site, working with their host, was able to block the IPs where the DOS attacks seemed to be coming from. Then Friday evening someone began flooding the site's forums and chat room with hate speech, including some death threats, and over-sized images meant to bog down the site, De Marco said. The flood of messages and images all originated from the same IP in Philidelphia, he added.
The site deleted the offensive messages, but the continued DOS attacks lead to the site's host taking GayGamer down until the attacks could be permanently blocked. De Marco hopes to get the site operational by Monday, but is having problems getting a straight answer from their host, GoDaddy.Com.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations a hate crime, also known as a bias crime, is a criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society that is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.
Its sad to see that even in the virtual worlds of gaming and game coverage people decide that the only way they can express themselves is by attacking others. Hit the jump to read GayGamer's official statement on the outage.
Hello, faithful readers: As you might have noticed, we have had some connection issues in the last few days and now the site is completely down. I'm sad to say that we have been the target of homophobic hackers. Thankfully, they didn't get to our database so all of our stuff is still in tact. At this point we are jut waiting for our service provider to ensure everything is good before putting the server back online. Hopefully, this will be resolved by the end of this weekend, so please keep checking back. You can't keep a good gay gamer down, so we'll be back before you know it, serving up all the sassy game content you can handle. Cheers, Fruit Brute

Youve got our support all the way Flynn.
I hope the FBI gets the piece of shit that did that and puts em away. These attacks are really pathetic and offensive, and the person(s) that did it don't deserve a computer or human interaction. Scum.
Man, fuck those guys. Keep fighting the good fight, Flynn.
That's messed up. They need to find that IP address and arrest that douche.
If you don't like gay people, keep it to yourself... Or at least don't go out of your way to besmirch a website.
Douche.
Homophobic hackers. It's a crazy world out there.
My time playing counterstrike online has taught me gaming has more than its fair share of immature idiots so this isn't really surprising. Ten bucks say a thirteen year old script kiddie is behind it.
Hope the site's back up soon, Flynn. And I hope the perpetrator has to face some consequences for his idiocy.
As both a friend of Flynn's and a fan of the site it angers me to see this happen.
But just you wait, you'll be back and stronger then ever in no time!
No surprise, unfortunately.
Spamming hate is one thing, but trying to take down a site is just down right terrible... It's the internet's version of arson.
@Jim on the Wall: Nice analogy. Right on the head.
I've always enjoyed reading Flynn's posts. I hope this gets remedied. If I had to put money on it, I'd say teenager with an identity problem and an attraction to Slipknot shirts.
What's "gay gaming", anyway?
For your consideration: A chubby, pimple-faced dope in his early twenties, living in his parents' suburban Philadelphia basement. Having never kissed a girl, his colleagues at Best Buy constantly crack "gay" jokes at his expense. The result? DDoS attacks on GayGamer.net to prove his masculinity.
While my attempts at bringing some levity to a most distasteful situation might be inappropriate, that was the first scenario that popped into my head. I mean really, why do people do shit like that? Makes me angry and sad.
Yeah I'm with you Stan, what kind of uproar would occur if someone made a "straightgamer.com" website? I think the whole GG concept is retarded.
Ugh. Further proof that high technology doesn't require a high level of intelligence.
@Stan LS: It's when gay people game :D
I always thought they should have called the site "gaymer"- it rolls off the tongue so well.
Meh, I wouldn't even feed their ego by calling them a hacker for doing a DDoS and spamming the forums.
@SirCletus: Think you hit the nail on the head there :)
This is sad...hopefully this will not happen again and the perpetrator will be brought to justice
I was trying to log onto the site all weekend and saw the beginnings of the homophobic comments on the forums before that on Thursday...Damn homophobes. We just want out gaygamer news and forums :-( Good luck Flynn and David in getting the site back up...we're jonesing for our gaygamer fix :-)
I think that it was prob more the result of a teenager thinking he is funny vs someone who truly wanted to attack gay people.
Not that it makes the end result any better.
@hillsht: It would be retarded if it was the majority, but it's not. If they can constantly connect "gay" and "games" on the website then what's the problem?
@HULLSHT: It's so they don't have to be attacked from people like the hackers. There are people out there that do it for no reason. So the comment you made is like saying who cares if they got hacked.
@HillSHT:
In case you haven't noticed, EVERY gaming site is a straight gaming site. Open your eyes. You just don't see it because it's all targeted at you.
@Stan LS: and @hillsht:
I think you guys are missing the point here a bit. The issue of the redundancy of having a "gay-gamer" site aside, clearly there has been an attack on their site for no other reason than that of homophobia. Such acts are simply deplorable.
As an aside, I'm sure many of you have played a multiplayer game of Halo 2. The amount of times I've heard the word "faggot" being used on there, you'd think we were all immature homophobic bigots =P
As a frequenter of the website (and a gay gamer), I noticed the downtime - just thought it was maintenance, though.
This is disgusting, though. What is it about today's society that makes people so unwilling to accept and peacefully coexist with different people? The crazy thing is that Jack Thompson's biased views on video game violence are going to get more coverage than this blatant act of homophobia.
The internet is starting to seem like a playground for bigots and assholes... Seriously, go on Xbox Live - or rather, don't - and listen to the young, impressionable teenagers spewing out hate-filled expletives. It's gross, and this is just the next level.
Godspeed on getting the sight back up.
Yea, what exactly is a gaygamer?
Don't get me wrong, I hope they get the DOS'er and he gets PMITA prison time. (pun fully intended)
Irony anyone?
they are stereotyping themselves. its one thing to make fanbased games. there are plenty of sites open to gay and straight i dont see why they want to go to a singled site for themselves. i guess a gay nerd as x2 the trouble of getting ass then a straight one. anyway my guess is this is a PR stunt.
@Flynn De Marco: Hey! Flynn's here!
Usually I would disagree with such broad statements, but (other than gg.com) I don't recall ever seeing gay themes on Kotaku...
I guess then you could argue if sexual orientation has anything to do with gaming- but I say why not? It doesn't really affect me. And also, the community of the website could make it important, but I don't know- I think I've only been there once.
@Flynn De Marco: Flynn, I couldn't agree more. I mean, it's difficult to find a "straight" gaming site that doesn't have codes to remove Lara Croft's clothing.
Your site isn't redundant, IMHO, and I hope you're able to restore it quickly and successfully.
Keep on keepin' on.
Kick some ass Flynn. Kick some ass.
I know that this isn't the most 'enlightened' approach to these issues, but the person or people behind this should just really be 'eradicated', as this sort of behavior demonstrates that they are merely a waste of space, resources, and bandwidth, and could--COULD--possibly dilute the gene pool even further in the future, which I think we can all agree, would be the BIGGEST crime against humanity they could commit.
I mean, at least the identity theft hacker types stand to gain something from their reprehensible ways!
I love the Internet for the info, I hate the Internet for the 'community'.
@systmBetatester:
A PR stunt? Are you crazy?
Just... spend a few moments on the internet. I guarantee you the most common insult will be some form of "fag" or "gay." That's not exactly an accepting environment. Besides, Gay Gamer isn't specifically for gay people - anyone is welcome there. It's just a site that is geared towards them so that they can get their gaming news without the constant homophobia. Seems like a good idea to me.
Death threats to anyone is always a sad thing but seems to be the favorite choice of typed attacks on the anonymous web. As an operator of a web domain, I can feel the pain of everyone involved with this including go dady.
TO CRECENTE:
Not to make light of the situation but I had to pause and put on a serious face again because of your careless choice of words: "...s having problems getting a straight answer from their host...". Please change that wording :(
@systmBetatester: A PR stunt? are f-ing serious? Yes, I would purposely remove my site that I have worked my ass off on for over a year from the internet for two days and lose hundreds of dollars for a publicity stunt. You, sir, are a jackass.
@Flynn De Marco:
I may be hetero, but I'm still going to disagree with you on that one. Sure, the average game site is mostly targeted at the majority, if only because most writers are typically going to be straight, but very few actually advertise themselves as such and intentionally seek out news items that will appeal predominantly to a straight demographic. Therein lies the difference. A straight equivalent of GayGamer would probably be a site that catered exclusively to heterosexual guys (and inadvertently lesbians as well), showing boobies whenever possible and constantly cracking jokes about straight male stereotypes without even pretending that it was intended for anything else. Catering mostly to the majority is a bit different from catering exclusively to the majority.
Oh, and just in case you get the wrong idea, I read GayGamer regularly and consider it among my favourite game blogs :)
well i'm not pro-homo.... but you definitely should be able to have your website without this rediculousness. Although the name of the site was bound to draw an attack here and there i hope you get the issues resolved and in the end everything gets working normal again.
Good luck Flynn, get his ip and we can send some DOS attacks of our own :)
If there's one thing i hate in this world is GAY-BASHERS. Go get a life!
Its sad to see that even in the virtual worlds of gaming and game coverage people decide that the only way they can express themselves is by attacking others.
But it's, unfortunately, an old new :/
@ SYSTMBETATESTER
PR Stunt ? you must be kidding, right ?
OMG... the ban hammer is going to be glowing red with the heat of over-use very soon.
While I think the concept of a website dedicated to gay gamers further encourages sexual segregation, I think it is despicable to ruin a wesbite somebody pays to keep running just because their target is gay. Wake up, douchebag: They can't help it, they were born gay.
It's just like seeing a site called blackgamer.com, and deciding to hack because it is run by a black person.
Obviously this hacker is a despicable human being, someone without a life...
Keep on motoring Flynn, been to the site a few times, heard you on Major Nelsons podcast.
Holy crap. I switched to my laptop recently, and haven't been keeping up with GG...
People can be so stupid sometimes.
Give it to them good, Flynn!
OK the site is for gay games so they don't have to put up with the stupid words like fag or homo. My uncle is gay and half is life. I know how they fell because I've stayed with my uncle and I've seen some emails he has got and I just hate some people for saying s*** like that.
What an asshat. I hope whoever pulled this faces the consequences. Not even the internet is safe...
Truly epic lulz?
@hillsht: I think some people are missing the point - attacking a person or a website for the sole reason that they are a part of a minority is a big deal. Sure, websites are attacked all the time, as are people, but when someone suffers abuse solely because of their belonging to a minority they need to be protected.
I understand why some people may not see the point of a gay orientated website, but if somebody feels safer being themselves there - who are you or I to deny them that?
Hope to see you back online soon Flynn, I love me some GayGamer.
@hillsht:
Heterosexual gamers are hardly under-represented, you know.
