Dexter's Murderous, Forensic Fun Comes To Consoles

DEXThe Showtime television drama based on author Jeff Lindsay's forensic scientist by day, serial killer by night series of novels Dexter is getting its own video game, IGN reports. Showtime Networks and Marc Ecko Entertainment are said to have partnered to bring the bloody, award-winning show to unspecified platforms at an unspecified date.

Yes, details are scarce, but the folks who brought you Mark Ecko's Getting Up are apparently working closely with Showtime to get it right. We just hope it turns out better than all that CSI dreck Ubisoft keeps shoveling out.

  • One of the greatest TV series ever!
    The game will be shite.

  • And the source for my nickname (look it up)

  • Now I can fail on Trauma Center and win!

  • It will TOTALLY suck if they don't get the original actor to do his deadpan, funny voiceovers.

Call me weird, but Dexter makes me LOL more than most sitcoms.

  • Maybe the main case will involve how the hell did Mark Ecko actually get rich?

  • yea..... i love dexter but this game will be terrible.

  • The only show on television I watch anymore, everything else is bunk in comparison.

I hope they do the series justice.

  • I love Dexter! I can't wait for the Season 2 DVDs. But yea..I still think the game is going to suck.

  • Hrm, probably won't be any good but I heard 'Getting Up' wasn't the dreck I'd suspected it to be.

Not like getting Dexter wrong will piss any real video gamers off-- it's a good opportunity to make money. You never know though, Showtime or the creators of the show might actually give a damn about making a decent game.

So, if they stay true to the character of Dexter, wouldn't this become JT's much sought after murder simulator?

  • Oh God. I wish this game would turn out really well, but it's bound to follow in the footsteps of The Sopranos and The Shield and end up being a steaming pile of shit.

  • If the Getting Up dev team is working on this, lets hope they include sound effects this time. I really wanted to like Getting Up, but the sound effect glitch on the PS2 version just killed it for me (you would punch someone but there would be no sound). I traded it in like the next day.

  • Heh, surprised that more than two people actually watch the series. Most people I know miss out on the greatness that it is.
Anyway, this is an intelligent, witty and character-driven piece of art, which means that there's no way on Earth it could work as a game.

  • @Hauler:

Speaking of which..Did "The Shield" game ever come out? I lost track of it a long time ago. I'm guessing it didn't.

  • This can only end in tears. Unless it's a Hitman-style game. Then the tears willn't be as bitter.

  • Image of Aethyr Aethyr at 04:36 PM on 03/03/08 *

This is not going to end well. The media's going to jump all over a serial-killing simulator.

  • Great show, though it wouldn't be the first great TV show to get an awful game adaptation (Sopranos, The Shield, Lost etc). Thing is though, it is such a great license - if they are willing to spend the money they could get some something really decent if they wanted.

My Dark Passenger is telling me to carve up whoever makes a bad job of this game...

Minor point: let's hope it is more like the TV show than the books. The third book in the series was bloody awful, it went down this cheesy supernatural route that didn't work AT ALL.

  • Call me crazy but isn't this show great because of the characters and their personalities? Not to mention that he's a serial killer which means he kills everyone more or less identically. What a horrendous game this will be.

  • Looking forward to more of the series (although I really don't know how much further they can take it; the two seasons been an awesome ride thus far). Not so keen on a game, since the series' charms rely on being a detachment which lets you be both disturbed by and sympathetic to the narrator, usually at the same time. If you actually play as Dexter, I really don't know how that would work.

If they get Erik King to voice Doakes for the game, however, I may buy it simply for that. Muthafucka's awesome.

  • Thanks to the ESRB, it is not possible for this game to excel in the way that Dexter the TV show does. The TV show wallows in the emotional detachment of the main character, and leads you to sympathize with and understand a serial killer. Another game tried to do that on a much more superficial level, it was called Manhunt. You may have heard of it getting censored. Because we as gamers sat back and let the ESRB censor that, and let them continue to exist in their present form (providing proxy parenting and setting the standards by which our children live, and making sure no AO games ever exist on consoles), we deserve to have this game suck. And we deserve to have every single game that ought to contain a mature theme to be stripped and left soulless.

  • Hey, doesnt "The Dark Defender" sound MUCH better than "The Bay Harbour Butcher"?

  • @otakucode: The ESRB is your friend. If they weren't there to regulate gaming, the government would be doing it instead. And I don't think any of us want that.

For what it's worth, I think a game based on Dexter could be fantastic; it could also be a mediocre Phoenix Wright knock-off. Here's hoping they do the show justice. I don't see any reason to worry about a media backlash, either. It would be hard to criticize this game for being violent or glorifying murder without having to step back and consider the source. If this content is acceptable on television and in print, why not in games?

  • well if they could make it a point and click adventure....

  • We were just joking about this the other day in the office - "oh can you imagine a Wii game based on Dexter?". Maybe you could listen to the speaker on the Wii remote to listen to your "dark passenger". As long as the special edition comes with a little rosewood box full of slides, I'm happy

Anyway, if the game tries to capture the main hallmarks of the show it'd work. The music, the deadpan inner monologues, the humour.

Though being a pessimist, here's what I expect:
    - Dead-eyed character models that look almost entirely unlike the actors
    - Different voice actors, to save costs
    - Shitty blood-spatter forensic analysis minigame
    - No actual cutting and slicing of jerks who deserve it, for the sake of getting a rating

Any developer taking this license on better do a great fucking job if they don't to end up in lots of pieces, in a bag full of rocks, at the bottom of the sea. I'm giving fair warning, so no complaints later.

  • God...Dexter is my crack. Then House comes next.

    @The Dark Defender:
"Jesus Christ Morgan...You're the Bay Harbor Butcher?!"
"I really do hate that name..."

I fear this game will be a little too linear, as was my only real problem with Indigo Prophecy was (though that was supposed to play out like a movie...) That, and without the original cast aiding with the voices, it's sure to blow. Hard.

I can see it being "Hitman-esque", potentially holding an open Miami-like area with free roam similar, but not entirely replicating a 3D GTA. (More like a semi-linear aspect of No More Heroes).

Please don't crap on this game, developers, lest I deny it ever existed....like new sequels to old-school DIsney movies.

  • Dexter is probably the best show on TV, shame they have to ruin it with a game.

  • @kiigan:

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST kiigan, you're the BAY HARBOUR BUTCHER!
    JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!

  • great show but...of all the things to make into a game why this? also wtf is with Ecko? His last game was pretty bad and I dont see this being much better

  • The show is great, the game will be a disaster.

  • I've never seen this show, what is up with that guys hand? Does he have leprosy or something?

  • I'm just saying, if they make a shit game, Harry's code will have been satisfied :)

  • Image of DaveKap DaveKap at 04:57 PM on 03/03/08 *

Agreeing that the show is possibly one of the greatest on Television and that this game will most likely suck ass. Unless they make it into a meaningful Hitman-like stealth title, I'm not sure how this would work out.

But oh God the idea of getting a box full of slides as a pre-order bonus would totally sell me...

  • Patiently waiting for Jack Thompson diatribe...

In any case great show that will probably be a horrible game.

  • @jrleek:

He's wearing gloves. Haven't you ever killed anyone? This is elementary!

  • Dexter is one of the best series on television today, and a way I can imagine this going is a lot like Splinter Cell: Double Agent went.

Office setting you have to sneak around, look up info, hide your tracks, tamper with evidence, hiding from Doakes and what not.

And second part can be like Thief: Deadly Shadows combined with Splinter Cell sneakery. Track down your mark, trick them into trusting you (dialog trees, hurrah!) and BANG, get in there, cut their cheek, dice em up, then you gotta dispose and clean up.

I think it could work, IF done right.

  • Unless I hear that this game is some sort of masterpiece, I'm not going to touch it with a bargepole, it'd ruin the books and the programme for me.

  • I don't know what everyone is so worked up about. Dexter is an awesome show, which means it will undoubtedly turn into an awesome game (don't all tv/movie games rock?). Plus you have to take into acccount that it's by the same guys who brought us "Mark Ecko's Getting Up", the game that toaught me that if someone is trying to stop me from defacing their property, I should throw them off a rooftop.

    /sarcasm.

Dexter really is a good show though, it would make an awesome murder simulator ;)

  • gimmie gimmie gimmie.

I'd say it and Prison Break are the two best dramas on television by far, and I look forward to this. Please don't suck.

  • Dexter is the best show on television, yes even better than Prison Break & Lost.

I dunno about a game though, but If they do it right and let me hunt down criminals and cut them in pieces It might be worth checking out.

  • Kotakuites know how to appreciate a great piece of drama.
    Very good, I'm PRIDE.

  • the only chance a tv based game has to not su.k , is a DS game...

  • Oh God, please let it be between seasons 1 and 2. Please let it have Doakes. And please let it not suck.

  • Can't wait for Season 3 to kick off. Brilliant show.

  • I read this earlier on IGN and my initial reaction was basically "Why?". I mean do we really need a dexter game? I love the show and I think that it's by far one of the best things on TV but there is no need for a game.

  • Big fan of the show. Probably one of my favorite all time series...
    But a game? I think I'll pass.

  • @jrleek: that's a dead person's hand... that's the point in the show - he's a psycho, but a 'good' one. it's dark humour, just like six feet under.

i don't know if the dexter story lends itself properly to game format, but given that the whole time dex is trying to avoid detection as well as find new victims the game could lead to some interesting mechanics.@Touy: i agree. i don't think it would be dexter without doakes.

  • Stupidest video game idea since Saw.

  • The cast is already on board so everyone can stop worrying that you won't get the right performances. It is indeed a remarkable series.

  • Dexter getting adapted into some Licensed Schlock won't change the greatness of the show itself.

  • @The Dark Defender:

One of my favourite scenes from Season 1.Hopefully they get the actors from the show.It would suck not hearing Michael C. Hall voicing Dexters witty inner monologue.Him and Erik King are too good together, they would both be essential to make this work.

I want to believe there's a possibility that this will do the series justice, I really do... but sadly, I don't have that kind of positive-thinking power. I dread a train-wreck of a Hitman-meets-Manhunt game (with a dash of Trauma Center for extra suckiness).

What next? A videogame adaptation for The Wire? Or Rescue Me? (Come to think of it, Rescue Me could be fun: a firefighting/hockey/brawling/dating/drinking sim with sex minigames and meds. What's not to like?)

  • @And after this our exile: Unlockable "I'm an asshole" video ftw

  • Excellent show. The first 2 books are good too
