The PSP Slim is alright, but it was a redesign that fell far short from standards we've seen from Nintendo. This PSP concept takes something I normally detest, sliders, and makes it practical. Hiding the buttons under the screen offers more visual real estate per pocket-filling inch. And if such a screen could tilt even 10 degrees for glare and support touch controls for a little on-screen QWERTY functionality, I'd throw by DS to the ground and stomp it with all my might. But alas, it's not a Sony design. Here's the open shot:
Hotness. But what's with those shoulder buttons?

Comments
It looks more expensive than a PS3.
Nice.
Not good... the screen is screaming for protection!
I would buy that in a second. the only issue I see is that the L's and R's are vertical on the side and not horizontal on the top.
I really didn't mind Sony's redesign. The system already looked very nice and works fine. Why change something that works? Of course I am the only person I know that likes the original DS better than the Lite (sans the screens that is). Still while this LOOKS nice, it sure don't look all that comfortable.
Didn't iRiver release something like this?
I think it's horrendous, and I can picture my hands getting cramped very easilly.
You'd need a wicked good case for that thing...
Looks uncomfortable for long play sessions. Also, how long will it be before the iPhone style is no longer the definition of sexy?
I don't think they'd "redesign" the PSP to be in a different aspect ratio than it is now. But maybe I'm just too much of a realist.
Id buy 1.
Too big for my pocket.
@Garo: and screaming really loud
Wow. Nice. Better than the real thing, know why?
...Dual Analog Sticks.
Redesign standards set by Nintendo? So what Sony should have done was release a butt-ugly PSP and then release what they should have originally released so everyone can re-buy what's essentially the same product. The PSP is already a slick machine, how much more improvement can you make without alienating the original PSP owners? i.e. adding a second analog stick.
I feel like it looks like a gameboy with flip-out ability. Not that looking like a Gameboy is a bad thing...just my initial impression
If it ever sees production, this thing looks like it will cost a fortune. I mean the PSP debuted at 250?.
It would break, it would be 5,000,000$
Doesn't seem that good to me, and those analog sticks.. eeeuurrghhhhh.
I really need to pick up a PSP slim soon...
my thumbs are sore just looking at those buttons.
I was thinking about something like this. Talk about odd.
That looks horrible to play on
Change the shoulder buttons and you've got me sold!
Is that a really well done render or is it a physical mock-up?
Awesome concept. I love sliders. Now I want to go get a sack of ten.
But seriously, my phone is a slider. The Moto RIZR to be exact. I kinda hate Motorola but it's a pretty phone, better than the RAZR or KRZR... stupid stupid names...
So do you even want a portable game console? Just get an iPhone Mark, that has more screen real estate than the PSP.
I don't think this would be any more uncomfortable than the original GameBoy or GBA SP...
The design's awesome, I'd buy that
Also, what the hell is Portable about that??
@Crosswayboy: here here (or is it hear hear?)... i'm sick and tired of apple's cynical 'style'.
i think the psp is ok, just that the nub makes my thumb sore
That looks awesome but like Garo said it really needs some protection on the screen.
Best. Mockup. EVER.
I would totally buy a PSP for the third time if they'd release one in that format. That looks ideal to watch movie too.
I still hate those nub sticks.
I can see breaking that thing in my first fit of fighting game rage. Things with sliders are just begging to be snapped in twain.
That design looks like it would work better as a portable DVD player, not something you need to have your hands on for any amount of time.
Clamshell design would make more sense. It would give just as much "visual real estate per pocket-filling inch," but would also protect the screen.
The DS is more portable than the PSP for the simple fact that it can be stuffed anywhere. God-forbid the PSP finds its way into the same pocket as your keys.
That does look really nice, but not at all practical. The controls look about as small as the Game Boy Micro's, I can't imagine how small the shoulder buttons are, and I'm not at all comfortable with such a large, fully exposed screen. I'm far too used to my cellphone and my DS, with their thankful flip covers. Expensive screen exposed to anything and everything at all times, like with my iPod Classic, still scare the **** out of me.
i couldn't stand to play 2 minutes on that thing. who ever did it is a really good graphic artist (it looks all shiny and real) but should never, ever, ever design game systems. thats just...a horrible design
Why can't they just put controller ports on the thing so I can just use a PS3 controller? That sure would be nice.
@Crosswayboy: Who ever said the iPhone was sexy?
That thing makes me drool. You could easily develop what is essentially a pocket computer. Add some online connectivity, a nice stylus, and maybe some free lint free cleaning pads for the inevitable finger prints, I'd be sold.
I rather like it - there are some problems with the shoulder buttons, but this easily solves the dual analog stick issue.
I'd buy it.
The PSP doesn't have much first person shooters and so I don't really have any problems with the 'shoulder' buttons being vertical - providing the thing doesn't weigh much.
I would totally buy it anyway.
I like it. The addition of dual analog sticks is cool, and being able to "close" it for watching movies and listening to music is welcomed.
If it could include a touchscreen (and if the button layout isn't too cramped), it would be an almost perfect portable.
am I the only one that hates the analog sticks on the dual shock/six axis? copying the design for a portable is...well...how shall we say...fucking retarded. My thumbs cramp from using the analog numb on the current PSP sometimes. How about making a unit that is comfortable to hold?
It is nice to look at but what's the point if it hurts to play it? Or would it be better to say, what's the point if it's pretty to look at but doesn't function?
Looks good, but I can see myself snapping it in half within the first level of GoW CoO. Needs a thicker body, better shoulder buttons, touch-screen capabilities (SE's new X1 phone) and NO SLIDE SCREEN!
OK, that is:
a) BUTT UGLY,
b) A broken screen waiting to happen
Besides, I already have one PSP paperweight, why should I buy another?
damn, that might actually look sexy enough to convince me to finally get a PSP. But what about those shoulder buttons...?
...And the lack of games I care about? (maybe there are some, but I'm not a huge portable gamer anyway)
That looks nice and all...but I rather hold the psp slim playing than that thing. It looks uncomfortable. I mean if you were an iphone user you might like it...but not us gamers.
@Guild_Navigator: If it includes bluetooth, you can just use the Dual Shock 3 wirelessly :o)
Yeah, it does LOOK nice, but not practical.
It's fuck1ng huge, and the controls are not even reachable.
PSP Slim is really good. It wasn't the redesign that everyone was expecting, but it was really good.
I think it's how the PSP should have been from the very beginning, THEN having a redesign making it even better.
But Sony didn't have experience in the portable market anyway, so I forgive them, because I believe the PSP is a portable masterpiece. Sony REALLY did a good job that time.
There are two main flaws of the PSP. No second analog stick and a nice screen that's unprotected. This only fixes one problem.
Still, it looks slick
@daizyujin: Not anymore sir. You can add me to your short list of those liking the phat.
That's still a sweet piece of concept art. Drop shoulder 'buttons' in favour of contact strips that detect flesh pressing on them. oh, and add touch screen to it.....so I don't have to stay with the current text input method pls.
People REALLY need to look for comfort than these devices that give you hand cramps. They are a pain in the ass for people with huge hands, like myself. I already feel like I'm gonna break the DS lite cause the crap is so small and I can't grip it right. Oh well, those companies will never look at comfort -_-
Also yeah, I loved the L/R buttons as triggers or shoulder buttons... That's kinda how I hold my controller, with the shoulder/trigger buttons.
That's not too bad, I'd buy one. Though from that concept I would like to see the D-Pad and Buttons drop a least a CM more.
This has the same fundamental issue that makes the current PSP unplayable for me - the analog stick(s) is/are in awful positions.
cool looking but not very comfortable looking, especially the L/R buttons.
good try.
@z357x: I had absolutely no idea what that comment meant until I did a Google search. It sounded like something horribly sexual. So it's pretty much the same thing as a Krystal burger.
