Electronic Arts, likely sick of having their recently-acquired role-playing franchise Mass Effect dragged through the mud on national television, has requested that Fox News Channel correct their error-plagued segment on the game.
In the letter, which cites Kotaku, Jeff Brown, EA's vice president of communications, asks Teri VanHorn, producer of the Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, to clarify "serious errors" the channel made in their Mass Effect story.
"As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect." The letter starts and then proceeds to outline their very strong case.
Your headline above the televised story read: "New videogame shows full digital nudity and sex." Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots - a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.FNC voice-over reporter says: "You'll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex."
Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.FNC reporter says: "Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."
Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.
The letter goes on to point out that the people who wrapped up the segment with a round table were equally clueless about the game: "They have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales."
The story wraps up by pointing out how insulting the resulting story was to EA and Bioware and asks, not demands, a correction:
The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?
This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.
Sincerely,
Jeff Brown
Vice President of Communications

Good for you EA, it's important, I think that publishers should step up to the plate to defend themselves, especially in light of such outrageous and patently false claims.

Hell yeah! This just made my day :)!!!
Fuck yes, it's finally time the major game companies stop leaving game's journalists and gamers to defend them. This is what I like to see.
Being on the same side as EA.
I feel...strange.
I hope they make a public correction on Fox. It's not likely, but... we can hope.
I'd love to see EA actually make this alegal threat. They stand to loose sales due to this.
I'm happy that EA and other game companies don't sit idly by while idiots on tv spout inaccuracies that hurt an industry I deeply care about.
EA smackdown! I still hate their guts but atleast their sticking to their guns.
God...I'm cheering for EA. I feel so dirty.
Wow. I can't believe I'm saying this but...
God bless EA.
Now I sit and wait for my head to implode.
Wow, EA just moved up in my book.
Fox News was way off base on that interview and that is saying something considering Fox news is hardly a news channel anyway.
It's amazing to me how "liberal" Fox's programming is compared to the "right wing" Fox news channel. What the hell is that all about?
Good for EA. Perhaps they do have a little soul left in them. I particularly liked the point about games increasinly stealing more TV viewers and how EA expects more of this kind of bullshit in the future.
As for a public correction on Fox, don't hold your breath.
Is this a worthy "Oh snap!" moment?
Anyway... Oh snap!
@okenny :):
Agreed...
you should correct the serious error in your spelling of channel. whoa burn.
*waits for the ban*
Seems like a fair, well thought out response to utter BS. Although, one can only wonder if Fox will decide to respond with "Oh yea? Well ur gay, hurrr." Seems to be the popular response to other well thought out responses to ignorance.
Fox News made the mistake of assuming that video games are created by tiny, meaningless fringe companies.
Fox News, meet EA's lawyers. Hell, EA could make a Madden spinoff out of that kind of confrontation.
Controversy = game sales
EA LOVES controversy :)
Normally I don't find EA to be the good guys, but nice to see them sticking up for their work and being very calm and professional with their rebuttal.
Here's hoping FNC will oblige; the station isn't ALL bad, have any of you watched their morning show (Fox & Friends I think it's called)? Quite the level-headed bunch on that.
The good doesn't excuse the bad, but it just proves that the whole thing isn't run by a bunch of complete lunatics; just some misinformed writers/anchors/panels.
Great stuff. Time to fight back, eh?! Damn the man, save the empire.
>_>
After watching that broadcast and having my blood boil, it is gratifying to see EA respond like this. It is refreshing to see EA stick up for Mass Effect like this.
Finally someone calls them out on it. I'd like to see if this goes anywhere. :)
Hey, it's Fox.
Their motto is: Fuck 'em, we're right.
I wish EA all the luck in the world in getting an apology that isn't filled with "but we're still right".
Great. Keep in mind that not only is the ESRB protecting kids from playing such games, but the ability parents have to set the 360 to restrict the games that can be played on it with a password protection completely destroys the claim that the attention whore had about kids playing their parents games when they werent home.
The worst part about that Fox segment wasnt actually the ignorant woman saying she had never played the game, but the lady in charge of the segment saying that parents were "going to HAVE" to dedicate more time to parenting :S.
I bet Fox doesn't make the correction...
Finally - some sense in this bloody repetitive argument. Although, I doubt Fox will be too concerned - it's not as if they've never had to issue retractions before.
Go EA, go!
(It's the end of the world as we know it)
Is it just me, or has EA really changed over the past few years. It seems like they are slowly becoming more developer friendly. From standing up to their developers (Bioware), to letting their teams push back deadlines on titles that are very popular (Warhammer Online, Spore). Maybe the Grinch finally heard the singing in whoville?
Fox making a public correction can only happen in la-la land.
Good on you, EA! Stick up for your developers when people are spreading misleading statements. This is a great way to start off your ownership of Bioware. Just don't muck up their next games, thanks.
@Fishballs: Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe EA is trying to win over BioWare fans by this move...
Jack Thompson probably put fox up to it
@Fishballs: Yea.. very strange indeed.
That feel better but I'll feel even better if I see them apologise.
This was bound to start happening. Gaming is growing up, and so is the business of marketing it. Sony, EA, Microsoft and other have very deep pockets, and they're not going to sit idly by and let soapbox pundits and vote-whoring politicians debase their revenue stream.
The game industry is soon going to start striking back, and hard.
i..... like EA?
I don't think anyone takes anything too seriously from Fox news anymore...
They show a sense of pride in their product. Credit the designers of this game and know full well the acclaim that it has garnered. Having politely issued a request for an appology from Fox, have gained my respect. Way to step up EA. (yeah surprised like everyone else that said that.)
Help us, EB-Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope.
Damn, I'm going to have to root for EA.
Ok, EA don't pull any punches.
I never thought I'd say this but: GO EA. Fuck Fox and their bullshit.
Ouch, when it's all laid out like that Fox should be happy they didn't go the legal route.
@A_Zombie: Gah messed up -_- I meant EA-Wan Kenobi
Oh dear god, what.. what's happening to me, either I'm turning into a werewolf or I actually like something EA did for once.
...
I feel strange. I am happy with EA for a change
Stand up for your product! Fox will probably end up ignoring you though. :(
If I wasn't in a lecture hall right now, I'd stand up and applaud.
Good job EA. Way to stick it to the "fair and balanced" news network. I eagerly await a response
maybe they should get on a street fight and make 'em learn their lesson.
Now that's wat's up.
@Piglatin02:
They have different audiences. Fox is just as much a for profit as any other channel. With the general left-leanings of channels such as CNN and MSNBC, Fox essentially "pulled a Wii" and went with a blue-ocean strategy of targeting conservatives. It's the first time they've ever had a real cable network to themselves. Then they released the whole concept of "Fair and Balanced" to try and draw all the conservatives frustrated with liberal media. It was so unlike CNN or MSNBC that conservatives lauded it as being fair to the right-wing. Personally, I can't stand Fox News. But if you think they're going to give up profits from Fox News to be more liberal, or give up profits in their primetime lineup to be more conservative, you're mistaken.
Hopefully this is first in a long line of counter attacks from the gaming industry.
Good for EA and I hope that both Microsoft and the ESA get on board. Games have been misrepresnetd by the media on a continual basis, but publishers and developers need to make a stand out flat out lies about their products. Hell, if the ESA wants to hire their own 'psychology expert' feel free to put them in touch with me... Unlike Fox's expert, I actually have a Ph.D.
Wooooo! They better correct this. I was so pissed when I first saw that video. And to make it worse it was on TV which has a lot of false information. I say we get rid of televised news and go to full on internet news since there's more correct information. Besides that it's much easier to correct information on the internet.
I want to hate EA but that was exactly what i was hoping they would do in response to the bogus news coverage
@danecy:
I've noticed that as well. Along with free downloadable content on their PC games instead of pulling a Horse Armor... Their Theme Park DS port was really well done, as well as Sim City DS. Dead Space, Spore, and other new IPs are really bringing them out of the sequelitis they are known for. Not to mention Skate and the new directions that existing franchises have gone towards.
It feels so weird to say it, but nice job EA. nice job.
Some EA representative, or a writer for 1up.com, will end up on the Bill O'Reilly show, and will proceed to be talked down to for three and a half minutes and not given a chance to get a word in on the subject before they run to commercial. Bet you all a dollar.
Hehe, is it just me, or is the clashing of "evil empires" just plain FUN to watch?
It's like Godzilla movies. I wanna see EA's laser breath!
Jeff Brown is a big contributor to the Republican party, so he might actually get an apology.
You tell 'em Steve-Dave!!
Lesson of the day, dont f*** with EA.
