About The Adventures of Elliot : The Millenium Tales

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is an action RPG with an HD-2D aesthetic developed by Square Enix, more specifically Team Asano and Claytechworks—the studio behind Bravely Default II. Known for titles such as Octopath Traveler, Live A Live, and Bravely Default, Team Asano, now part of Square Enix’s Creative Studio 5, is making its very first foray into real-time action-RPGs among its HD-2D productions. Its previous works mostly followed the traditional conventions of turn-based J-RPGs.

The game is set in Philabieldia, a continent under the control of beast-like tribes. With humanity on the brink of extinction, mankind’s last stronghold is the kingdom of Huther, a land protected by a magical barrier once erected by Princess Heuria. That's where the player takes on the role of Elliot, a young adventurer accompanied by his fairy, the ever-loyal Faie. The story takes a sudden turn when the boy discovers an artifact called the Gate of Time. Now able to bridge the past and the present, Elliot will travel through several eras.

If the premise brings back memories, it’s no coincidence. The title immediately strikes a chord with the great classics of the 8- and 16-bit eras. You can spot little touches reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Game Boy, 1993), but The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is most reminiscent of the Mana series. This connection is evident in the exploration, with its caves, dungeons, and shrines to visit.

The game’s clever twist, however, lies in its magilith system: rather than a skill tree, it features crystals to collect that grant bonuses, penalties, and effects for weapons. As for the world of Philabieldia, it is not an open world in the traditional sense, but rather a world that unfolds across the ages. As you discover different eras, the map overlays one time period onto another to reveal new areas to explore.

Available since June 18, 2026, on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, it marks a new milestone for the renowned Team Asano.

Why Should I Play The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales?

Often described as the spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is a real-time action RPG whose story revolves around time travel. Combat relies on positioning, timing, and anticipating opponents’ movements and attacks: the action features Elliot, who can wield up to seven types of weapons, two of which can be equipped simultaneously. What makes them unique? You can switch between them in the middle of a battle, allowing you to change the pace of combat in a matter of seconds. The game gains tactical depth thanks to magiliths, which affect both the characters and their arsenal. The game also features a shield that allows players to parry attacks to stun enemies or even deflect their own projectiles back at them.

These magiliths, which represent the customization layer for your character and their weapons, are hidden in chests, nooks, and secret areas. They are artifacts that modify weapons through active bonuses, bonuses, penalties, or elemental effects that boost their abilities. That way, you can build your own strategy to tackle obstacles in your own way, especially since there are so many of these magiliths, which add variety to your progression.

For her part, Faie is much more than just a decorative mascot: she solves puzzles, creates distractions, retrieves out-of-reach items, and assists Elliot in battle, making her an essential companion. The game also features local co-op, allowing a second player to take control of the fairy. It’s an excellent idea, even if her movements are more limited than those of the first player.

Despite its old-school feel, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is an absolutely delightful game for anyone who loved Zelda, Secret of Mana, or Chrono Trigger. The real-time gameplay adds more dynamism than a turn-based system, and the story—which unfolds through back-and-forth journeys between four eras—is quite well-crafted. Players will discover a variety of locations and some very endearing characters.
