Track and Fail
Eugene, Oregon is known as “Track Town USA,” thanks to the University of Oregon. Falling well short of that standard is yours truly, slapping the wrong goddamn buttons on Konami’s Track & Field, here at the Eugene City Brewery. Yeah, I tried the old comb trick (here with a knife.) This couldn’t have been more…

A Visceral Games engineer built this Minecraftized trailer to celebrate Dead Space 2. “I put it up in time for launch but it was too dark,” he writes. “Now that the partying has worn off, I remembered to brighten it.” The trailer was done by Michael Noonan, a gameplay engineer for Visceral. “The whole environment…

Warcraft Gold Farmers Get An Ultimatum From PayPal
The makers of World of Warcraft have struck back at the game’s gold-farming black market, convincing PayPal to suspend the accounts of those using the service for gold-selling transactions. Warning letters went out this month. Blizzard’s complaint to PayPal accused gold-farmers of selling Blizzard’s intellectual property, i.e. the virtual goods. PayPal’s complied and sent notices…

Dragon Quest VI Arrives Too Late For Gaming Grandmother
In 1995, Enix America closed, throwing plans for an English release of Dragon Quest VI into doubt. “I may not live long enough to see Dragon Quest VI,” wrote one fan. She wasn’t exaggerating. She was 76 at the time. After 15 years, Dragon Quest VI will get an English localization on Feb. 14, but…

Coming February It’s … Rémi Kart 2!
Not a game, but it is a sequel to “Rémi Kart,” the hilarious viral vid by Rémi Gaillaird, the famous French prankster who also trashed a supermarket in a Pac-Man video. Rémi Kart 2 is due in February. What would a Rémi video be without him getting chased by the cops?

Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Evony, In Perfect Harmony
The inspiration for this week’s ‘Shop Contest challenge comes from Manly McBeeferton, who out of nowhere dropped a Minecraft/Evony mashup into our #minecraft tag. I figure there are many more games that could use the treatment. Come ‘Shop, My Lord! No source images per se, but you’ve got a few exploitable angles here. 1) The…

Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Your Mom Hates ‘Shops Winners
A maternal reproach of Dead Space 2 served as the inspiration for last week’s ‘Shop Contest challenge. We received more than 800 submissions, so, inevitably, someone’s getting left out of this roundup. Multi-panel entries were by far the most common; Bouzi (3) Damian Jose Hernandez (6) and ilikejelly (10) supplied the best. Obligatory themes included…

Fight Night Barely Breaks A Sweat In Multiplayer Demo
Fight Night: Champion’s demo arrives Tuesday, but apparently some in the UK have gotten their hands on it. Notably, the demo will include online multiplayer. This series of four videos gives you a look at what to expect from it. My early impressions are that the graphics are strong and the punches come in quicker,…

An FPS-Style Ammo Counter, In Real Life
Playing shooters, I’ve often wondered if the persistent knowledge of exactly how many rounds you have left delivers a tactical advantage you can’t have in real life. This invention delivers a video-game advantage to the battlefield. This device – fixed to an automatic weapon, no less – counts the rounds remaining in the magazine. It’s…

How A Video Game Made Him Into A Major Leaguer
He’d given up six runs in three innings of work when MLB 10 The Show sent the manager out to remove him from the game. Even in a video game, the bad losses stick with you. They stick with Hans Smith a little more. Smith, 25, bitterly watched the remainder of the game, every play…

You’re Getting 45 More Angry Birds Levels Come March
Angry Birds Rio isn’t the movie we’d been hearing about – it’s a crossover with a movie, delivering another 45 levels to Angry Birders in two months, says the game’s maker. The pigs don’t figure to appear. The premise of Rio, as nearly every animated feature’s premise goes these days, is a stranger-in-a-strange-land tale involving…
