The end of a Tekken 7 tournament has sparked some wild speculation about what, exactly, a trophy plaque says. When the winners got on stage at South East Asia Major last Sunday, the tournament organizers handed the first-place cup to Byeong âQudansâ Mun Son. Then, they told him to turn it around so the plaque couldnât be seen. Meanwhile, third-place winner Kim âJDCRâ Hyun Jin kept reaching for the trophy, perhaps to turn it around⌠or to claim it for himself.
At least, thatâs what the Twitch chat thought during the eventâs livestream, with many fans erupting into trophy conspiracy theories. One user named EvilDogGames asked, âIs JDCR written on it?â Several other fans echoed this claim and posted it elsewhere, leading to a widespread rumor that South East Asia Major had printed JDCRâs name on the trophy in an assumption that he would win.
The video doesnât provide a clear shot of the trophy plaque, so thereâs no way to prove this theory wrong. None of the tournament organizers or participants have clarified what the plaque said, either.
If you ignore the fact that the other trophies for the event didnât include a playerâs name, then, sure, this conspiracy theory is 100% plausible.
The livestream of the event adds fuel to the fire, too, since JDCR keeps reaching for the trophy, looking at the plaque, and laughing. Also in the video, one of the event commentators, âTasty Steveâ Scott, steps forward to say, âYouâve gotta turn it around, no?â Then, once he sees the plaque, he laughs and says, âOh, wait, that isâno, no, you donât wanna show that. You donât wanna show that!â
Michael Murray, the Bandai Namco employee who presented the trophies onstage, tried to shut down the speculation by tweeting, âNo, that was not the reason. Please donât spread false rumors.â The tournament organizers confirmed via email to Compete that âthere was just a slight error we discovered on the trophy⌠We had to amend the text on the trophy and provide Qudans later with the correct trophy.â
When pressed for details about the error, the organizers said they âcanât remember what it was.â
Tasty Steve also denied the rumors about JDCRâs name on the trophy by tweeting, âanyone who believes this⌠itâs NOT true,â and, later, âLol I was looking directly at it [the trophy]. Youâre going to tell me im lying now?â When asked what the trophy did say, though, Steve didnât clarify. He also didnât respond to Competeâs request for comment before press time.
This case has been a tough one to crack. Even if you zoom way in on the trophy presentation video, the letters look too blurry to read:
The bottom bold text probably says âChampion,â like the other event trophies. However, the game title text looks way too long to say Tekken 7. It looks like it might even say Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite⌠or perhaps it just says âJDCRâ five times in a row. Or a misspelling of Tekken 7 so egregious it takes up the entire width of the plaque.
In any case, Qudansâ first-place trophy does not have his name on it, or anyone elseâs name. Unless either JDCR or Qudans decides to change their names to âTekken 7 Champion,â but they should probably wait until the Tekken World Tour finals wrap up before setting that in stone.
