Pokémon Boss Thought The Switch Was Going To Be A Failure
The Nintendo Switch is a hit, especially in Japan. But before the hardware was released, Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara told Nintendo it wasn’t going to be successful. When speaking with Bloomberg (via Nintendo Everything), Ishihara recalled what he initially thought about the Switch. “I told Nintendo that Switch wouldn’t be a success before it…

Nintendo Releases Original Star Fox 2 Design Docs
Last week, Nintendo quietly uploaded the digital manual for Star Fox 2, which will be included on this month’s SNES Classic hardware. But what’s really interesting is that said manual included a whole batch of concept art and game design documents for the canceled Super FX Chip shooter. Nintendo doesn’t often release these sort of…

Why Wario And Waluigi Don’t Have Girlfriends
If Mario has Peach, why doesn’t Wario have…I dunno, Meach? It’s a fair question, and one that I’d never known the answer to (if in fact there ever was an answer). I do now, though, thanks to the unearthing of an old Nintendo Power interview by the excellent Supper Mario Broth Back in 2000, the…

Mario Is Officially No Longer A Plumber
According to Mario’s newly updated, official Japanese-language profile, the iconic character isn’t working as a plumber. This shouldn’t be a total surprise, because the character seems to do everything but plumbing. But doesn’t going down Warp Pipes count? Doesn’t appear so! Here is how the recently uploaded Mario profile explains the character: All around sporty,…

As of Sunday afternoon, the SNES Classic at Nintendo’s PAX booth remains safely behind glass. Note that it has once more been rearranged compared with yesterday and Friday, which raises further questions about the ease with which the case can be opened. We will continue to monitor the situation as it develops.

One day in, the SNES Classic at Nintendo’s PAX booth remains safe and secure. The controllers and information card have switched places since yesterday, however, indicating that someone opened the case and rearranged its contents. We will continue to keep you posted on this situation as it develops.

Finally, It’s A New Metroid
I got the new Metroid on Tuesday but waited two days to start it. I’d waited a long time for this, and I wanted the moment to be perfect. Metroid is my favorite video game series. Did I fall for these lonely sci-fi action-archeology games when I played the first one, as a 10-year-old boy…

Here’s How Ubisoft Convinced Nintendo To Let Mario Use Guns
So much about Kingdom Battle is surprising, but the thing that I still can’t get over is that in this game, Mario shoots his enemies with a gun. This is Nintendo’s mascot we’re talking about, and the game wasn’t developed internally. How the hell did anyone get Miyamoto to sign off on that? Very carefully,…

Miiverse Posts Can Be Saved, But Users Are Still Mourning
The New Super Luigi U community has been a shitposting safe haven on the Miiverse since 2016. But soon, it, along with several other miiverse communities, will be no more. You can still save your shitposts, though. As you may know, the popular Miiverse platform will be shut down by Nintendo on November 7, 2017.…

Nintendo Switch Vs. PlayStation 4: In Japan, The Switch Keeps Dominating
Of course the Nintendo Switch is doing better than the PS4 in Japan, you might say. But that’s not what I’m talking about. Rather, in each console’s first 26 weeks on sale in Japan, the Nintendo Switch posted significantly better sales numbers than the PS4 did. Previously, Kotaku has reported how the Nintendo Switch was…

Splatoon 2‘s Post-Release Guns Are Keeping My Playstyle Fresh
Since Nintendo released the Switch’s cephalopod third-person shooter Splatoon 2 in late July, they’ve been injecting the game with a continuous stream of excellent weapons. After finding my cozy comfort zone of Splatoon 2 weapons immediately after launch, Nintendo’s dedication to varying the game’s weapon arsenal is now inspiring me to try out different playstyles…

Dark Souls to Super Mario World: Highlights From Our 12-Hour Stream
Yesterday, my colleague Jason Schreier and I spent 12 hours sitting on my couch and streaming video games. We ate some pizza, sang some songs, and beat some bosses. It was fun. Each of us picked three games for the other one to play. Jason had me play Suikoden 2, Super Mario RPG, and Super…

There’s A Tiny Spot In Zelda Where Cel-Shading Doesn’t Work
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has a very distinctive cel-shaded look. That, for some reason, breaks if you climb inside one tiny little space. Rangers_of_the_North noticed it around a month ago (thanks, @MaxOfS2D) after climbing into the area, which you can find halfway up the gatehouse on the bridge over Lake Hylia.…
