Will Sony reverse course on its controversial announcement to end PlayStation disc production by 2028 following days of loud backlash? That’s what some fans are hoping as they share their support for campaigns like “Don’t Kill the Disc,” a petition that’s already garnered over 120,000 signatures in support of saving physical gaming for the PS6 console generation.

“We are not against digital. We are against digital being the only option,” reads the letter started by PNP Games CEO Jade Pearce. “A large and passionate community still wants a real, physical game they own outright, and Sony is about to take that choice away. Sign to tell Sony to keep disc-based games alive beyond 2028, so the next generation can own the games they play, not just rent them. If we do not speak up now, the disc disappears, and the choice goes with it.”

The petition is full of people sharing their reasons for wanting Sony to reverse course, including short video diaries about why some people want to preserve the option to own their games physically. There are also some players threatening not to buy the PS6 if it remains a digital-only ecosystem.

“Without a physical media, I just won’t buy another console,” wrote Nelson Ricardo. “I don’t trust Sony anymore, and the PS5 will probably be the last console I will own before going full pc, but it would be nice to not make me feel stupid for buying it at least until this generation is over.”

Another player named Tony wrote, “During the PlayStation 4 generation, I made the leap from a competitor (something I’d previously sworn I’d never do) and purchased my first Sony console. I quickly invested a lot of time and money into the PlayStation ecosystem under the belief that I would be a long-term customer. I purchased a PlayStation 5 console on day one and buy a large percentage of my games in physical form on release day. I will not be purchasing a PlayStation 6 if physical games are discontinued. I have started to perceive PlayStation as a consumer-unfriendly brand and feel like I am being taken advantage of.”

It remains unclear whether Sony feels it can weather the current storm of negative sentiment or is having internal conversations about potentially altering its next-gen plans. The latter seems unlikely, especially as disc factories already retool for other products, but the “don’t kill the disc” issue has also clearly broken out into mainstream culture in a way few gaming backlashes have. While the overwhelming majority of games sold every year are now digital, the idea of a physical game disc has become an integral part of gaming culture, even for players who largely moved to digital long ago.

Fans are still waiting to see how Sony will respond to the fallout. IIt’s been five days since the company broke the news and the PlayStation social media accounts have been in stealth mode ever since. It’s not hard to see why. Even the company’s unrelated posts about Spider-Man: Brand New Day are getting trolled.
