David Ellis of 343 Industries’ Halo team has tweeted: “If you see a page claiming to allow you to sign up for a Halo 4 beta be advised, IT’S A FAKE.” Hear that? It’s a faaaaake
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag, drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel like you wish you could just, I don’t know, deck out your Sims sim in Katy Perry gear, start a sim-music career, and go on tour? Well, now you can. EA has announced that the…
The Game Developers Conference has announced that Epic Games head Cliff Bleszinski will be hosting the Game Developers Choice awards, which take place the week of GDC.
Greetings, Kotaku travelers, and welcome to a new week. For with a new week comes all sorts of new things to talk about. Here, gathered as usual from the suggestions of my fellow editors and writers, is a list of various internet falderal upon which you can feast your eyes before diving into the comments……
I was disappointed with Uncharted 3 for a number of reasons. Certainly one of those reasons was that the game had bizarre difficulty spikes and could be kind of a dick sometimes. But another, possibly bigger reason was that while Uncharted 3 generally mirrored the pacing and story-arc of Uncharted 2, it lacked one of…
The iOS competitive word game Quarrel is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, Joystiq reports. The game was initially developed for XBLA, but was moved to iOS due to financial troubles at its development studio. It’ll come out on Jaunary 25th and cost 400 Microsoft Points, or $5. (It is currently free on iOS.)
About a month ago, I wrote the following post about “The Metagame,” a fun card game dedicated to fostering debate about video games. Right as I published it, however, the folks behind the game ran out of inventory. They’ve just gotten more printed, so I thought I’d re-post now that you can order your own…
I caught this over the weekend when our friends at Rock, Paper Shotgun posted it—some folks have been dilligently working on putting together an HD “Deluxe” version of the beloved Tim Schafer/Lucasarts adventure gaming classic Grim Fandango. They’ve posted a video that, sadly, isn’t in-engine, but it does give a good sense of what their…
The Independent Games Festival (IGF) has announced the finalists for this year’s IGF Awards, which will be held at the Game Developers’ Conference in San Francisco in March. Some truly great games on this list. We’ll have more coverage of the IGF in the coming weeks.
Since running a big, enjoyable feature on Duncan Harris, the “video game photographer” behind the website DeadEndThrills, I’ve been sharing some of his work each week here. This week has some great stuff. Here we go! First up, at top, we’ve got one of several shots from Star Trek Online, this one titled: “Harbour Lights.”…
The Wall Street Journal has news of yet another gaming study, but this one’s pretty darn interesting: Rather than judge video games’ effect on violent behavior or socialization, the study looks at whether games can help people escape nightmares. Specifically, the study looked at military men and women, 64 of whom were “hard-core gamers” and…
Recently my friend, who for this article we’ll call “Dan,” was over at my apartment for beers and video games. We’d gone through most of the big fall releases—I showed him some craziness from Saints Row: The Third, got across the gist of Catherine, and played some (shockingly fun) split-screen Modern Warfare 3 spec-ops. The…
Canadian broadcast news organization CBC has put together audio documentary about propaganda games, featuring our own Stephen Totilo. In the piece, they discuss the case of Amir Mirza Hekmati, a man sentenced to death by the Iranian government for, among other things, allegedly making propaganda video games for the company Kuma Games. They also talk…
Here at Kotaku, we run all sorts of stories. Video game news and reviews, culture stories, stories about Japan, stories about the history of video games, funny posts about snack foods. But no matter what stories we’re running, there seems to be a consensus out there in Internetland: “Kotaku commenters are the worst.” I’ve been…
Welcome, Kotaku clan, to our relaxing Thursday night open thread. We have had a dearth of late-night open threads of late, and I can only blame the holidays for that. Fortunately, we’re back and running. How were your holidays? How has the new year been treating you? Have you finally beaten all of the games…
I was happy to stumble upon the free Kongregate game Midas today. Created by Melbourne-based Kongregate user wanderlands, it’s a simple 2D platform/puzzler based around the story of King Midas. King Midas, as you may remember from Greek myth, was granted the magical ability to turn everything he touched into gold. Of course, he soon…
That quote, dropped by Mass Effect 3 lead writer Mac Walters in the most recent BioWare Pulse developer diary, shows that he is at least very serious about talking about making Commander Shepard show some real emotion this time around. As I fretted in my “5 Reasons I’m Nervous about Mass Effect 3,” every time…
Most folks don’t really much like the term “Gamer.” It has a lot of cultural baggage, and is even a little bit like “Hipster” in some ways. We all like games these days, don’t we? So what is a “Gamer” anymore, anyway? Over at his blog The Ludologist, video game researcher (and author of A…
My what small legs you have, Samara | A detail from a charming collection of drawings of the Normandy crew by inker/illustrator/horror-expert Stacie Ponder Why Most Of Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s Hi-Res Graphics Disappeared at Launch During the beta test for BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic players with high-end PCs enjoyed stunning high…
From Software’s upcoming Mech-buster Armored Core V has a release date—it’ll be landing in stores on March 20th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Apparently, it’s not really the fifth title in the series, it’s the fourteenth. Fancy that. Check out a trailer for the game here
