Arthur C. Clarke imagined that centuries in the future, things like racial distinctions, language and dialectical inflections will all be blended out of the human experience. I think we can add another: Genuine emotive interaction. I foresee a world in which most of our social interactions take place in antiseptic online environments out of real time. After about a century of Tweeting, texting and the like, our language will adapt to accommodate the lack of context or real-time interaction. This will make truly emotive experiences rare. It's a roundabout way of saying I'm genuinely sorry for the emotive experience I expressed by email to Dad after the Michigan State-Wisconsin game last night.
