2014’s The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which is a remake of the original 2011 roguelike RPG action shooter, is currently one of the most popular games on Steam and has set multiple player count records over the last two weeks, beating out games like Warframe, GTA V, and Delta Force. And it’s all thanks to one heck of a good deal.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is one of many, many games you can buy for just a few bucks during the ongoing Steam Summer Sale that started on June 25 and ends on July 9. But while many games get small bumps in player count thanks to Valve’s annual sale, Rebirth is exploding in popularity. That’s likely because the game is currently marked down from $15 to just $1.50. And if you want The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and all of its DLC, you can get the normally $50 bundle for just $5.

This damn good deal has brought in a lot of new players, apparently, as The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth has hit over 156,000 concurrent Steam users in the last 24 hours. This breaks the game’s last big peak, which happened…just a few days ago on July 5 when over 153,000 players were all enjoying Rebirth at the same time, according to SteamDB. And that beat out the previous record of 130,000 set on June 29. Which beat the previous record of 109,000 set on June 27.

Here are some numbers to provide better context for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth’s massive upswing in popularity. Before all this Sumer Sale madness, Rebirth’s biggest concurrent spikes on Steam happened in 2021 with around 70,000 players and at launch in 2014 with around 69,000 players. So yeah, the game is bigger than ever right now.

While you can probably attribute most of this new success to the game being dirt cheap, another factor that can’t be ignored is the success of Mewgenics earlier this year. That game was co-created by Tyler Glaiel and Isaac developer Edmund McMillen. Mewgenics reached over 115,000 players on Steam in February, and it’s very likely that a lot of Mewgenics fans looking for something to play next are showing up to check out The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth thanks to the big summer sale deal. Between now and Thursday, will Rebirth be able to set another CCU record on Steam? Seems very possible.
