Xbox 360 owners that subscribe to AT&T's U-verse television service can return one of their set-top boxes this Friday, when the service goes live on Microsoft's console. Would you pay $99 to turn your 360 into a cable receiver?

Last Friday we posted information indicating that the U-verse experience would launch sometime next month. How about sometime this week? Along with the news that a U-verse app would be available for Windows Phone 7 devices at launch, AT&T revealed today that the service is launching on the Xbox 360 this Friday, October 15.

What does this mean to U-verse subscribers? Essentially their Xbox 360 will become a U-verse receiver, acting just like a set-top box would—as long as they own an Xbox 360 with a hard drive.

U-verse subscribers watching television through the Xbox 360 will be able to receive game invites while they watch live television, access On Demand movies and shows, and record and playback television, DVR-style.

U-verse customers can contact AT&T at 1-800-ATT-2020 to request the $99 Xbox kit. A technician will install the software required on the console.

Note that the service does require one standard U-verse receiver be present in the household.

Who plans on giving this service a go? As a Comcast subscriber, I won't be partaking myself.
