The good news is that Ubisoft has brought Heroes of Might and Magic III, a strategy classic from 1999, back to Steam in a content-complete form. The bad news is that die-hard fans who rushed to buy it didn’t get the game.

An HD version of the game put on Steam in 2015 lacked the expansions and certain features. “This is the original version of the game from 1999,” reads the new listing on Valve’s storefront. “The pack includes the original Heroes of Might and Magic III and its two expansions: Armageddon’s Blade and The Shadow of Death.”

Unfortunately, when players first went to spend $10 on buying the game and clicked download, they only got a 23.49 KB file that gave them an error message when they tried to launch the game. “Warning DO NOT buy this game, this is frankly so ridiculous they did not even include the game files with this release,” read one angry Steam review.

The person continued, “It only contains a dummy .exe that when you launch the game just loads up CMD, how can you get this wrong?”  “Ubisoft you are a well established company and have released so many games on steam, how can you mess up so badly? Avoid this and buy on GOG where it actually works.”

Don’t worry, of course Ubisoft eventually fixed the issue. “Around ~10/~11 hours after the release there was a 770MB update, which finally added game files into the game directory!” announced another player. “Game is working now… I’m still leaving a bad review for that premiere tho. Sorry Heroes 3, it’s not about you, you’re a great game…”

The entire thing is still very funny though, unless you were excited to play Heroes of Might and Magic III last night and ended up getting errors instead. The game’s re-release arrives alongside the announcement that it’s getting a new remake. This overhauled 4K version will bring the game to consoles for the first time, though fans area hopeful it hasn’t ditched the original’s soundtrack by Paul Romero.
