We’ll soon be coming up on two years since Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched, and with no major releases this fall, Ubisoft took the opportunity to update fans on the current state of the franchise. The good news is that fans we’ll get an update on Assassin’s Creed Hexe, the next entry in the stealth action-RPG series, in 2027. The bad news is that Ubisoft confirmed it currently has no plans to remake any more Assassin’s Creed games.

First, the update on Hexe. Ubisoft shook up the Assassin’s Creed leadership team, a move which included replacing Hexe‘s creative director, Clint Hocking, at the beginning of 2026. There’s been no new news on the upcoming game either, despite it first being teased all the way back in 2022. “We’re making steady progress on this darker Assassin’s Creed experience, though there is still work ahead of us,” head of AC content Jean Guesdon said in a new blog post.

He continued, “We know the wait has been long, and we’re grateful for your patience and continued enthusiasm for the project. The team remains focused on delivering the unique vision at the heart of this project, and we’ll share our next major update in 2027.” If the game somehow doesn’t release until 2028, it’ll be another large gap between sequels for a company that used to ship new ones every single year.

Guesdon also confirmed an updated direction for Codename Invictus, the company’s long-in-production multiplayer PVP spin-off of Assassin’s Creed. It had a closed test earlier in the year and the veteran developer said it was useful for refining the game’s design. “Players saw great potential in the foundations but wanted more of the pillars that define Assassin’s Creed,” he explained. “The team spent the past months acting on it, and Invictus is now evolving in an exciting direction that better reflects those pillars while staying true to its multiplayer ambitions.” Still no release window.

You might think that this has all been going on because there are a bunch of other teams working on other Assassin’s Creed projects like, say, remakes of some of the early and most fondly remembered games in the series. Nope. In no uncertain terms, Guesdon laid out that “no other Assassin’s Creed remake [is] actively in development.” Never say never, obviously, but that suggests that at the very least it could be a long time before we see another Black Flag Resynced-style game from Ubisoft, which seems lowkey very bad for a publisher that is struggling immensely in the current AAA game development environment to make money.

Ubisoft has long been a trend chaser, first with open-world and live-service games, and later with cloud streaming, NFTs, and now genAI. So I’m genuinely perplexed why the company with a sprawling blockbuster development apparatus spanning the globe, and not nearly enough annual game releases to fund it, wouldn’t invest in a steady pipeline of high-quality remakes to help it survive the game industry’s current winter. The early Assassin’s Creed games are especially ripe for this sort of treatment. The gameplay often feels clunky by modern standards and there’s no shortage of ways to build out those historical settings into more expansive, more visually immersive worlds.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot appeared to be making a similar argument when he promised multiple remakes back in a 2024 interview. “Firstly, players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we’ve created in the past and modernize them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin’s Creed games that are still extremely rich,” he said at the time. “Secondly, to answer your question, there will be plenty of experience variety. The goal is to have Assassin’s Creed games come out more regularly, but not for it to be the same experience every year. There are a lot of good things to come, including Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which we’ve announced, which is going to be a very different game from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. We’re going to surprise people, I think.”

We’ll see if 2027 is the year that finally happens.
