Sea of Thieves will get a competitive mode, Arena, in early 2019, Rare announced today at XO18. Crews will compete to get the most treasure.

Sea of Thieves—yes, people still play it and have fun doing so—has a new patch that overhauls Merchant Alliance quests. “Cargo Runs” have been added, with special goods that pirates need to deliver and handle with care. It’ll hopefully make merchant missions a bit more exciting.

Sea of Thieves’ “Cursed Sails” update arrives on July 31st. The free content update adds dangerous skeleton crews to liven up the seas, as well as the three person brigantine ship. Which means you can finally sail a big ship without having to invite Jim. “Oh, sorry Jim. There’s no more room.”

Sea of Thieves’ first content expansion, The Hungering Deep, will release on May 29th. The trailer above teases horrible monsters under the waves that some people (probably players eventually) can summon. Which sounds like a pretty awesome way to troll that solo player in their sloop.
