Itâs been just 72 hours since Ryan âNorthernlionâ Letourneau, beloved Twitch streamer and film bro extraordinaire, announced a bizarre streamer event taking place next year: the Northernlion Supercruise. Three days after the announcement went live, the supercruise has officially been canceled, and everyone who booked rooms will be receiving refunds in the next few days.
Fans were unsure if the initial Northernlion Supercruise announcement was serious. As far as streamers go, Northernlion is relatively normal and seems to keep an actual work-life balanceâhe doesnât make appearances at streamer events, for instance, and is known for raking disrespectful chatters over the coals. When the supercruise was announced, fans thought it was an insanely elaborate bit (NL is a big fan of cruises, after all). But it was real. While it lasted.
The Northernlion Supercruise was going to be a five-day streamer event on a Royal Caribbean cruise, departing from Tampa, Florida, and making stops at Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, before returning to Florida. Northernlion was going to headline the event, and streamers Dan Gheesling, Squeex, and LovelyMomo were also going to attend.Â
Once fans realized the announcement was, indeed, not a joke, reactions were mixed. Many were concerned for the health and safety of not just the streamers but also the cruisegoers themselves. Fans also brought up ethical concerns over Corporate Travel, the travel agency in charge of the supercruise, promoting trips to Israel in the midst of the ongoing genocide against the people of Palestine.

Over the past three days, Northernlion seemed incredibly nervous during discussions of the supercruise on stream. âI think this has illuminated for me that I actually do have an anxiety disorder,â Northernlion admitted in a stream talking about the event before it was canceled. âI was drained, but, like, not in a good way.â
âPrior to the [Northernlion Supercruise] announcement, most of my nerves were like, âHow can we make this a fun event?ââ he said in a Thursday stream. âAnd then people started saying, âHow can we guarantee everyoneâs safety?â Not just the safety of the streamers, which has been talked a lot about, but alsoâŠhow can we make sure everyoneâs safe and what happens if someone gets hurt or gets sick, God forbid?â
âWe only wanted to do it if we felt like everyone was comfortable, and I was getting more and more uncomfortable with the idea.â
In terms of the events that were planned to take place on the Supercruise, such as a streamer Q&A session and a speedrunning contest, Northernlion said theyâll still happenâbut now theyâll be streams instead of paid live events.
Now that the fever dreamâs over, Iâm gonna go catch up on the Coke Zero Supercut.
