The gritty Darkwing Duck reboot millennials have been craving is closer than ever to becoming a reality. Disney’s plan to bring back the ’90s cartoon now has Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen signed on, alongside Lizzy Caplan and Lilimar.
Rumored to be in the works as far back as 2020, the reboot has now been officially greenlit, though there’s not even a whiff of a timeline for when the new animated series will actually land on Disney+. As you probably already guessed, the Star Wars icon is playing the titular Darkwing Duck while the voice behind the Mario movie’s Donkey Kong plays his sidekick, pilot Launchpad McQuack. Caplan will voice Gosalyn Mallard, Darkwing’s adoptive daughter, and Lilimar will voice Duckie. I’m not sure who that is.

For the last 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits. Now a rebellious teen named Duckie who knows all about his heroic past shows up to pull this ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. Together, this unlikely duo will get dangerous to fight old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the entire universe.
If you’re not old like me and didn’t grow up in the ’90s, Darkwing Duck is a spoof of Batman in the vein of DuckTales. The show also gave us one of the best intro theme songs ever penned for television. Despite Darkwing Duck being my favorite TV show somewhere between 1995 and 1998, I can’t say I’ll be there day-one for the comeback over three decades later.
But I am looking forward to hearing whether Hamill, a master of voices, tries to do an homage to the irreplaceable Jim Cummings or put his own unique spin on the character.
