The challenge of following the story of Kingdom Hearts comes less from its complexity and more from how difficult it is to actually play or watch the story of every entry in the 25-year-old series. That’s particularly true of Kingdom Hearts Union χ, a mobile game that was shut down in 2021 but that nonetheless features the only previous appearances of multiple characters who are set to return in Kingdom Hearts IV. The inaccessibility of this narratively crucial game might be about to change, however, thanks to one intrepid fan.
Excitement began to circulate on social media when a prominent modder and fan named Arena7664 shared a statement on their account promising the imminent release of a fan-made browser port of both the main Union χ game and the companion side-story that was later introduced, Dark Road. Both can be considered prequels to the rest of the series, the former chronicling the Keyblade War and the story of a character known as the Master of Masters that has mostly remained sequestered to this title, despite looking set to form the bedrock of the narrative for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV. Meanwhile, Dark Road follows the origins of Xehanort and what sent him down the path to darkness, a story that has concluded but nonetheless appears to have some influence on the upcoming game. The port even promises a few quality-of-life updates to speed up Dark Road gameplay, according to its main developer.

The Union χ story, however, won’t be playable here. That’s because this is merely a port of the final version of the mobile app to PC. During the game’s official run, an offline version of Dark Road was made available, so that game remains playable here, but as for Union χ, your only option is to watch all cutscenes within the app.
This isn’t the first time that the story has been made more accessible by longtime fans since the game was discontinued—it has been fan-dubbed on YouTube—but it is the first time since the game’s closure that the actual game has been made accessible to those who didn’t play it during its active years.
It’s also not the first time discontinued content relating to the series has made it to the public eye in recent months, with the opening cutscene of the now-canceled Missing Link mobile game recently leaking to the public. At a time when excitement for Kingdom Hearts IV is high and Disney is investing heavily in the series, this port of Kingdom Hearts Union χ seems like a good way to get up-to-speed with the story ahead of the highly anticipated new entry.
