Putting the Nintendo 3DS' rumored design to a vote makes for somewhat anticlimactic results a week later, since Tuesday we learned what it actually looks and plays like. But let's turn back the clock to Sunday, when we didn't.
There were some serious entries that got commenter raves, and they've been recognized here. tsozikds merged matte and glossy black into a stylish must-have casing. biogeek71's concept likewise won wide acclaim. PirateSquirrel may have jestingly invoked the iPhone's casing but many loved the sliding design. Hoss360's was less realistic, but makes the point that, goddammit, how many times do we have to demand twin analogs on a handheld?
Then the nutball submissions: Rick_Masters said screw it, we're going all the way to 12 screens. arcanasphere had the best take of what was on a lot of people's minds. boopadoo took his sweet-ass time getting one in, but came down from the mountain with Miyamoto holding a Ten Commandments-size portable. Bouchart was the first with an M.C. Escher riff that might have been a little easy - I think Jimmy_Jazz even outdid it with this - but Jimmy_Jazz gets in with an outstanding ViewMaster mashup instead.
My favorite? I'm gonna cop out and go with one that tugs at my heartstrings for a game I'd replay straight through tomorrow: GKi's homage to Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. An absolutely outstanding game on the last console generation. I got rid of my Xbox three years ago for some stupid reason, and it kills me this (nor Jedi Academy) never was made for the PS2 so I could pick it up used today. If the 3DS brought back Jedi Outcast even in 2D form it would all be a day-one purchase for yours truly.
Thanks again and hats off to all who entered. Tune in tomorrow for another 'Shop Contest challenge.
