Gaming Addicted Woman Strangles Toddler, Leaves His Body On Floor For Three Days

Illustration for article titled Gaming Addicted Woman Strangles Toddler, Leaves His Body On Floor For Three Days

Here's a story full of holiday cheer: A Korean woman, who'd just finished a four-hour social gaming session when her 3-year-old urinated on the floor, strangled the toddler and left his body to decompose in the home for three days.

How many of these kinds of stories are we up to for 2010? There are at least these two, but I feel like I've read at least a dozen.

In this one, the 27-year-old mother is said to have been tending virtual pets and cards in a four-hour gaming session when the toddler began crying and urinated on the floor. That provoked the beating and the strangulation; the body was left in the home for three days, and it was found by her horrified in-laws.

The woman has another child, who is one; their home in Cheonan, about 50 miles south of Seoul, was described by neighbors as a trash dump, where her two children were left crying for hours. The woman would regularly clock 10 hours at the computer playing these games. In this instance, a police investigator said she told cops she'd finished four hours at the computer, was going to take some rest from her virtual activities, and became enraged by her toddler's disturbance.

Nothing else to say except it's a sad and appalling story. Merry Christmas.

After reading some of the comments here, I have to say I'm appalled at the reactionary comments of some of the people here.

A few examples before I get into the body of my post:

"Keep her suffering."

"She needs to die."

"She should die in a fire"

I'm really disappointed that so many people couldn't even pause to take a breath and think beyond "Woman kills baby". Have we as a species become so stupid that we can no longer look past the surface and see what's beneath what we read/hear/see/etc?

This woman clearly has some mental health issues. If any of you are of the opinion that someone with mental health issues deserves to be in a constant state of suffering, needs to die or needs to be burned to death then I feel those acts would be better done to you. At least then there wouldn't be such ignorant, unthinking reactionists around and we could go about trying to help these people.

It was a truly horrible, tragic act that the woman carried out but these were her own children. No mother, no matter how cold, kills their own child, let alone baby child, without having some serious mental health issues. Perhaps this all could have been avoided if those close to her spotted the signs of mental illness and acted appropriately. Perhaps it could have all been avoided if society as a whole didn't make mental illness into a taboo that needs to be treated with ridicule and ostracisation.

Really, I'm truly disgusted with some of the opinions I've read here in the comments. If anyone that reads this wall of text shares those opinions, I hope you stop to reconsider your stance on what this woman deserves or needs regardless of the horrible act she commited.
