Re: Breaking
Congratulations to Spain for the first World Cup won in the history of a first-rate footballing nation. They won with eight goals in seven matches. That's a record low for a Cup champion, and about as few as you could possibly score going this far.
I'm no keen observer of the game, but in terms of a critical reception, I heard Ruud Gullit, on ABC, call the match "boring," and "not a good advert for the game." Seemed plenty exciting to me, but I could be overcompensating for the fact Americans are programmed to think it's boring. And besides, he is Dutch.
That said, Though the U.S. did not go further than it had before, I still felt like the country had an historic tournament in terms of its own expectations, performance and interest, and I hope this beautiful sport finds a warm welcome in the States in the months to come.
Congratulations to Spain and thanks to La Furia Roja, and the Oranje, for a hard-fought finale.
