Over the course of this week’s FIFA Interactive World Cup, Spencer “Gorilla” Ealing scored 46 goals across three days on his way to the grand final. In a 7-3 aggregate, Ealing not only took home $200,000 in prizes, but the first FIWC win for England since 2005.
The lead up to the final FIFA 17 match yesterday between Ealing and Kai “Deto” Wollin was dramatic, at least on the PlayStation side. Wollin’s final against Timox had both a red card call and a questionable offsides that ruled out a goal. Wollin emerged the winner thanks to a golden goal in extra time, and moved on to the final.
Ealing’s run on the Xbox side was dominant, establishing a 6-0 lead in the first game of his final match and winning with an aggregate 7-2. Taking down Germany’s Xbox talent, Ealing would move on to face their PlayStation best in Wollin.
Though Wollin took the early lead 3-1 on his home console, Ealing pushed back to a 3-3 tie to even the field going into the Xbox half. On his own console, Ealing put up four unanswered goals, cementing his victory at 7-3 and taking home the FIWC trophy for England.
Though Ealing breaks a drought for England, past winners of the FIFA Interactive World Cup are fairly diverse. Winners in the last decade have included Denmark, France, Spain, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and the United States.
Ealing takes home $200,000 and the pride of winning the first trophy for England since 2005, when Chris Bullard won 5-2 over Hungary’s Gabor Mokos. When asked what he’ll do with the money? Put it in savings, he says.
