To celebrate 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios, the company released a short video looking back on its history while also teasing the future. At the end of that video, Bethesda confirmed the previously reported claim that Elder Scrolls 6 is titled Sentinel. But if you were expecting a release date, well…bad news.
On Tuesday, Bethesda creative director Todd Howard presented a small look back at 40 years of Bethesda history. Then, at the end of the video, Howard mentioned that it was a “perfect time” to look forward.
“You know, everybody’s always asking about Elder Scrolls 6,” said Howard. “And we thought, hey, given the moment, what a perfect time to tell you what The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called.”
After that, a brief teaser plays, revealing a scroll buried in sand, before finally confirming that the title of Bethesda’s next big RPG is indeed Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel, as many fans expected.
In Elder Scrolls lore, Sentinel is the name of a major city located in Hammerfell, which is believed to be the main setting of this upcoming entry in the long-running RPG series. A previous report claimed the game would reveal more about the ancient origins of the titular Elder Scrolls, and the teaser above, featuring a scroll being pulled from the sand, seems to suggest that report was accurate.
In June 2026, Howard seemed to indicate the RPG was possibly still years away from release and that it was too early for a “re-reveal.” I guess a name reveal is different.
This is the first new teaser for Elder Scrolls 6 since Bethesda first announced the RPG about eight years ago at E3 2018. At the time, Bethesda didn’t provide a release date or even a rough window. In the many years since, Howard has claimed that he regrets that the studio announced it so early. Considering the fact that nearly a decade has passed since that first teaser and The Elder Scrolls 6 still doesn’t have a release date, yeah, it does seem like Bethesda revealed the RPG far too soon.
Since 2018, a lot has happened in the game industry, including the slow death of E3 itself. And just two years after announcing TES6, Bethesda was bought by Xbox for $7.5 billion. Meanwhile, Bethesda launched Starfield in 2023 to mixed reviews from both fans and critics. Earlier this year, Xbox made big cuts to Bethesda while also announcing big plans for Fallout, including a New Vegas remaster and a new Obsidian Entertainment-developed entry in the RPG series.
