During Summer Game Fest, Sega finally sped on in with its new reimagining of Crazy Taxi, which is now going global. It’s officially called Crazy Taxi: World Tour, and it’s out sometime next year on Xbox consoles, PC, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5.
Yup, that sure is Crazy Taxi all right! Complete with “All I Want” by The Offspring, we get to see plenty of crazy driving in this trailer, complete with knocking over soda stands, careening over hills, and making craaaaaazy money from picking up goofy fares.
Also, we have just learned this game was apparently made with the help of generative AI. So that’s stinky!!!
You’d be forgiven for not knowing Crazy Taxi is actually a series: most folks know it just by its original arcade and Dreamcast incarnation in which you drive a taxi around a San Francisco–inspired city picking up fares, taking them where they’re going as fast as possible, and doing ridiculous stunts as you go. Notably, you’re driving along to songs by rock groups like The Offspring, who teased today’s reveal somewhat with the recent unveiling of their new song with Electric Callboy, “Let the Good Times Roll,” and its cover featuring a taxi:
There were more Crazy Taxi games after that, up to and including a mobile game in 2017, but the heyday of Crazy Taxi has been over for a while. This looks to be Sega’s big attempt to bring back the goofy classic driving game for modern audiences, but we’ll have to wait to see if there are any shiny new bells, whistles, and fuzzy dice that’ll bring this extremely late-90s game into the 2020s with the rest of us. You know, aside from embracing generative AI. Ugh.
