This Plant Is Your Role Model
To: B.A. (Baracus) From: Mr. T(otilo) Re: This Post Is Not About StarCraft II As day turns to night, as the baton passes from citizens of the free world to the non-Americans on Team Kotaku, as darkness enshrouds the Western hemisphere and I go off to play some Metroid Other M (while magically having a…

Disney buys Playdom
Disney is purchasing social gaming company Playdom (Social City, Sorority Life) for half a billion dollars. EA’s got Playfish. Disney now has Playdom. FarmVille maker Zynga still rules. Facebook gaming’s huge and the big companies are clearly very into it.

Donkey Kong Co-Op Is Friendlier Than Mario Co-Op
During an afternoon full of upcoming Wii and DS games yesterday, I got a chance to play the next Donkey Kong game with a second player. It went better than my first co-op Mario Bros. gaming last year. When I teamed up with other players in 2009’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii I was usually…

And Yet It Moves Makes Sense On Wii
There I am playing Wii games, the games I’m writing about all day today, and a Nintendo rep asks me if I want to play a WiiWare game. Sure, I love the weird stuff. WiiWare, folks, is all about the weird stuff. Games about giving vegetables haircuts. Games about throwing pairs of people onto cubes.…

ReviewsTrauma Team Review: One Of Those Better Games
There are the video games we expect to be great, games from which we expect innovation and sophistication. Trauma Team, an interactive medical adventure sold at a discount price, was not supposed to be in that group. But it is. Trauma Team is the fifth game in the Trauma Center series. On both the DS…

Kirby Helps Me Measure The Distance Between Video Game Pacifism And Slaughter
Kirby’s Epic Yarn is an adorable game about a pink puffball made of yarn. But we’ve covered that already. Today’s topic: Why does Kirby kill? … or… Why do I make Kirby kill? This is the latest in our day-long series of impressions of holiday-scheduled WIi and DS games that I played with some Nintendo…

What If Wii Party Were A Great Game?
The second game of my Nintendo holiday preview was Wii Party. I planned to suffer. A half-hour later I wondered if I had played the best Wii game for this fall. A fake bomb helped. Wii Party seems at first, at second and at third like Nintendo at it’s most cynical. Wii Sports was a…

Let’s Start With FlingSmash, A Wii Game That Loves Left-Handed People
Who gets a couple of hours to play any of the Nintendo-published games arriving this holiday season for the Wii and DS and starts with FlingSmash? Me. Yesterday I played a batch of Nintendo games. Throughout today, I’ll tell you about them. My tour of Nintendo’s holiday games occurred in a hotel room in Times…

Our Video Game Sand Castle Contest Winners
Last week we challenged you to make video game sand castles. We dangled fabulous prizes at you (StarCraft II books). With one weekend to accomplish the task, we got five winners. We were hoping for 10. Quality, not quantity? Contestants needed to make a video-game themed sand castle and include the word Kotaku on or…

Did Video Games Help Me Accept Inception’s Ending?
From the second Inception ended, I’ve been bumping into people who are trying to sort out it’s ending. I’m not one of them, thanks, I think, to video games. (Note: I won’t spoil Inception’s ending here, but commenters probably will.) The struggle people are having with the ending is sorting out what the next moment…

What Happened When Lightning Struck A Gamer’s House
Jeff Hickman’s house got struck by lightning last spring. It destroyed two of his three game consoles, zapped his daughter’s retainer — which was in her mouth — and caused some other odd damage. He shared his story with Kotaku. As spoken by Jeff Hickman, an executive producer at BioWare Mythic, to Kotaku during a…

Heavy Rain Move Support Might As Well Be Violin Support
In theory, the PlayStation 3 controller is a complicated mechanism, a device with too many buttons for the average person to understand. In theory, the better control mechanism for interactive drama is a good old remote control you can wave. Heavy Rain, which is indeed an interactive drama made to be appreciated by regular people…

The Good 3D, The Bad And The Nauseating
I have finally played PlayStation 3 games in 3D. Three of them. I was impressed; I felt ill. More of the former. Some of the latter. My big 3D chance occurred last week at a showcase event for most of the big games coming to the PlayStation 3 and PSP this holiday season. Imagine a…
