The Inventory Of A Soldier, Over 1000 Years Of War

Photographer Thom Atkinson is to thank for this captivating series of shots that show everything an English soldier has carried into battle (or at least near a battle) over the last 1000 years. As you can probably guess, there are more magazines and snacky treats now than there were at the Battle of Hastings.

While the images of the more modern kits have the most stuff, it's the older outfits that are the most interesting. I love how around the 15th century they start getting playing cards, and by Waterloo there's a game of draughts (and a yo-yo!). It's a wonder there weren't army-issue Game Boys by 1991.
