Magic: The Gathering is boldly going where it’s never gone before with a Star Trek Universes Beyond set releasing later this year in November. Not surprisingly, at least one of the cards will feature Captain Kirk sitting on the bridge of the original Enterprise, and William Shatner could not be less impressed with it.
While we don’t have the full reveal yet, initial artwork for a leaked Commander deck card from Star Trek‘s MTG crossover was shared with the sci-fi icon by a fan on social media, where he immediately started dunking on it. “They should redo the card as he looks like he didn’t have his Kellogg’s Raisin Bran that morning and will have some trouble boldly ‘going’!” Shatner wrote, suggesting MTG‘s rendering of his Kirk made him look like he was struggling to drop a deuce in the captain’s chair.Â

But it got worse. “Here is a better look at the art,” another fan wrote back. Shatner accused the art of looking like slop. “It looks like it’s AI,” he wrote. “There’s lots of things not ‘right’ about it: Where’s Kirk’s right thumb? The characters on the right are poorly executed and why is Spock leaning to the right like???”
The Star Trek actor also took issue with how Spock was rendered in the background. “BTW, I straightened the image out using the seatback as a straight edge and he’s still like that tower in Pisa, Italy.” It’s unclear how serious he was actually being or if the original yellow shirt was just messing around.
The card itself, titled “Captain Kirk: Boldly Going” is a gold Commander card featuring green, white, and blue. It gives spacecraft creatures +3/+3 and lets players search their deck for basic lands or any cards named Starship Enterprise. Some are already calling it a flavor quality fail, but we won’t know how good or ineffective the card is until the reset of the set gets revealed.
