Why Lunchtime in Japan is Cute Time

It is for little kids. Above is a lunch my eldest son ate late last year. And it was pretty cute!

My eldest son is eight, and his lunches usually are not this cute. This was made cute out of nostalgia, really. My wife and her sister wanted to make a cute lunch for him.

But usually he eats the more normal looking stuff that adults do.

Little tiny kids usually get packed lunches like this. They're made cute so the kids will clean their plates (lunch boxes?) and so that lunchtime is fun—something to lunch forward to.

I'm always amazed how creative these lunches can get.
