A new Zelda at launch is nice, but I’m much more excited about the idea of going online with my Nintendo Switch and blowing the hell out of seven other players on a grid-based playfield. It’s so good to see you again, Bomberman.
Launching with the Nintendo Switch on March 3, Super Bomberman R is the first console version of Konami’s superfun multiplayer bomb battler since 2010's Bomberman Live: Battlefest for Xbox Live Arcade.
In Super Bomberman R’s Battle Mode, up to eight players compete in online or local multiplayer, dropping bombs, gathering power-ups and trying to trap their opponents in bad places. The feeling between being trapped and the explosions going off is one of the most unique forms of dread in gaming history.
If it were just the battle mode, that would be fine. But Super Bomberman R also features a 50-stage co-op Story Mode for one or two players. The official announcement promises an “enriched” story voiced by prominent voice actors, which sounds just lovely.
According to today’s Treehouse Live presentation of the game, players will earn gems as they play through Story Mode, which can be used to unlock cosmetic enhancements, but also pay for continues. It’s up to the player whether they want to restart a series of levels entirely or pick up where they died.
Whatever, I’m just happy to have more Bomberman coming. Between the launch release of Super Bomberman R and the spring release of Puyo Puyo Tetris, the Switch sounds like it’s going to be a great place to refresh colorful classics.
