The Legend of Zelda

An iconic series of role-playing games for Nintendo consoles, The Legend of Zelda follows the saga of Link and Princess Zelda as they fight to save the world of Hyrule from the evil overlord Ganon. Tears of the Kingdom is the latest entry in the long-running series, released in May 2023. The first Legend of Zelda game was released on the Famicom Disk System in Japan on February 21, 1986.

The Legend of Zelda's abysmal CD-i adaptation from 20 years ago—Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon—were KGB'd out of Hyrule Historia, the series' canonical volume. MTV Multiplayer asked series director Eiji Aonuma why, and got a rare comment from Nintendo about one of the worst games of all time.

The Wii U grows exponentially more interesting, with the addition of outstanding modern platformer Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and classic role-playing game Breath of Fire II in today's Nintendo Download. What other wonders lurk in this week's selection of digital downloads? Behold!
