Sony's motion controller has neither a name nor a finalised form. Which means, yeah, it's still a work in progress. And that means it won't be out until, oh, Spring 2010.

PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai has told The Times "we are slating it for spring of next year". "It" being the motion controller. "One of the things is that we just don't want to put out the controller", he says. "We need a great software that supports the controller at launch. It's something that we've been working on for the longest time."

Wonder if he means one or two pieces of genuine software, or an EyeToy-like pack-in of party games?

Sony has had some awesome tech in the past. They just need to get it out there and push it to the forefront. I was an early adopter of the EyeToy thinking, "Man, this thing has crazy potential!" and then . . . nothing. The minigame bundle was a good taste of things to come, but all we really got out of it was AntiGrav and a bunch of tech demos on the OPM demo disk that never came to fruition.

New tech is only as good as the software it runs. The PS3 is a powerful console with awesome features, but if it didn't have games, I wouldn't have bought it. Same goes for this. I hope Sony really pushes to get this out there and get some support behind it. If they roll it out like the EyeToy/PS Eye, everyone will go, "Oh, that's kinda neat." and then it'll plummet with a resounding thud while everyone enjoys the Wii and Natal.

It's not that people don't want the tech, it's that it needs to be supported. It looks amazing. I just hope Sony handles it better than they have the EyeToy. From the taste we've gotten though, this thing ships in a little over 6 months, and all we've seen is what appears to be . . . a minigame bundle. Yikes.
