Some Gamecube-playing jokesters' trip to Splash Mountain supplied the canvas upon which our smart 'Shoppers illustrated all sorts of hilarious scenes for the latest Kotaku 'Shop Contest. We've got a gallery of 20 all-stars, plus winner meelooteen inside!

Leading off, BigMike McCarthy (2) supplied a solid callback to an earlier contest. Prof. Bananas Goldsteinberg (15) found Doc Brown in the perfect pose. rtanger (17) and 0xC001D00D (1) both went with yo-dawg concepts. Both made me laugh, so both are included.

Details: Brand Silven (3) was both timely (Splash Mountain, Disney Adventures) and he matched the action on the screen to the players gesture. TEL9021's (20) looks like a regular old screen-swap until you realize Magikarp used Splash! And with Google maps aboard, pan1da7 has no need for Tingle, so out he goes.

Two personal choices that made me laugh like hell, but probably only me, were hufty1980 (11) putting the crew on Endor, using C-3PO as a weapon, and CG420 (4) of course going with Asshole Dog. I know the guy is choking the dog, but it does look like they're humping.

Overall winners? clayburton_5 (5, appropriately enough) must be expanded and enjoyed. He was the clubhouse leader with a lot of pull from the community. danschmiedeler (6) went retro and meta, so that's metro? Hundredgunner's (12) decision to put them all in a Warthog was inspired. but meelooteen (13) prevailed with the simple, yet utterly brilliant inclusion of Frank West from the cover of Dead Rising. Bravo.

Hats off to all who entered, and especially the finalists, for making this a superb 'Shop Contest. We'll be back to do another tomorrow.

DISCUSSION

I don't wish to belittle the entries or their creators, nor do I want to come off as stuck-up or snobbish, but the fact that Stars are awarded for these has never sat right with me. Maybe I've missed the point, but isn't the purpose of stars to ensure that people who comment are capable of doing so with respect, insight, humor, intelligence, etc?

It seems strange to me to be giving stars to people for doing something that doesn't really say anything about their ability to contribute to a comment discussion. There are many people who I would argue deserve stars, but a person who creates a funny picture (And again, they are legitimately funny) is the person who actually gets one.

Of course, it may just be that I'm nostalgic for the old days when stars were (Or seemed) more limited. I feel like I see a lot more idiocy and trolling from starred commenters than I used to. The operative word is "feel", maybe I'm just more jaded now :)

If any discussion arises from this, please have the maturity to discuss the issue rather than any ulterior motives you may think I have. As someone with a star, it might look as though I want it to stay "exclusive." As someone without a star, it might look as though I'm trying to weasel my way into getting one. All I can give you is my word that neither is true, it's just a discussion I think is worth having.
