Super CLASH Bros is rough and unfinished, but look and sounds alone will win you over.
In the game, created by Jeremy Eden, up to four players can choose from a roster that includes Mario, Mega Man, Knuckles and others, and battle one another in a fever dream of retro nostalgia.
Unlike other Smash Bros.-inspired projects which are often either mods, like Project M, or updated variants, like Super Smash Flash 2, CLASH is trying to stay as true as possible to the games the characters are from. The sprites are ripped from the games they originally appeared in, with everything from animations to sound effects evoking fond memories of the NES and SNES days.

Instead of color palette swaps, characters can be played using different skins. So with Link, for instance, players will get to choose either the one that appears in the original The Legend of Zelda, or the one that appears in Link to the Past. And while it’s not shown yet, Eden says he’s working on putting Link from Zelda II in there as well.
There’s lots of other cool and unique touches as well. Characters health meters are based on what was used in their corresponding games (Link has hearts, Mega Man has a yellow meter) and items that appear during matches range from Mario’s Hammer Bros. suit to Sonic’s flame shield.
So far the game only has local co-op, but Eden wrote in a recent blog post that he hopes to include online play in the future, and plans to show the project off at Smash Con in August. “I plan to continue updating this game for awhile, maybe even add online multiplayer, hopefully build a fan base around it,” he said. “If it gets shut down then I’ll start focusing on the successor, Super Clashup, featuring indie characters and modding so that you can create your own characters.”
