Maybe A Dark and Gritty Pokemon Wouldn't Work

Oh, sure, many of us would love to see Game Freak try for a more mature Pokemon, just to see what it's like. But could it even work? Or would it just seem ridiculous to take the elements of Pokemon and try to make them dark?

I'm starting to have my doubts after looking at SamC-Art's comic, which pokes fun at the idea.

DISCUSSION

I'm so sick and tired of dark and gritty.

It seems like there is this notion that making something dark and gritty makes it more realistic (remember kiddies, a game's quality is directly tied to how realistic it is). To be honest, I really find it depressing that people seem to view more dark and gritty experiences as being realistic while viewing more lighthearted and optimistic experiences and fake and childish.

Has the world become that fucked up where cracking a smile means your entire narrative is too colorful or childish? Maybe it has..... but all the better to create some happy escapism fantasies, though.
