John Carmack Says Doom 4 Will Be 'Done When It's Done'

Speaking at QuakeCon today, Id's John Carmack said they're hard at work on first-person shooter Doom 4 and it will be "done when it's done."

He added that Id had shut down its mobile division—previously responsible for phone-based versions of games like Doom and Wolfenstein—to free up more staff for AAA games like the next Doom.

"The Bethesda family really is about swinging for the fences," he said. "I hope that we do get back to mobile in various ways in the future, but the real aim is blockbuster triple-A titles, and for Id that means Doom 4.

"Essentially everybody will be focused on Doom 4 as a project."

Contrary to everyone else I absolutely adored RAGE, sure it wasn't perfect but I had a very enjoyable time with it and I thought the technology behind it was the most interesting I'd encountered in an FPS since Valve's source engine, well, maybe Far Cry had left a similar impression on me... Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the game, it wasn't perfect and probably didn't live up to the hype but then that's the benefit of ignoring said hype machines, I also bought it several months later for the PC and all of the performance kinks seemed to be ironed out. Runs like a dream, beautiful breathtaking combination of graphics, art style and animations.

Wish I could say such positive things of the narrative!

edit:- What I mean to say was, loved RAGE, can't wait for Id's next game, marvellous!
